KAVEEL SINGH
AFTER months of controversyandpublicpressure–asprom-ised – indigenous trees will be
planted at the corner of GenazzanoRoad in Seatides.
Thepopularpark in theareacameunder the spotlight after an eThek-

Whittaker also admitted to incor-rectly assessing the environmentalimpact of the tree felling with hun-dreds of weaver birds killed and dis-placed in the process.
According to Whittaker, the De-partmentofForestryrequestedhere-move trees on his personal propertyonWatsonHighwayattheentranceofWestbrook.
Hesaidhe thereafter offered to re-move the trees on Watson HighwayandGenazzanoclaiming“seedswerecreating saplingsafter Ihadremovedthe trees”. Now, speaking to theWeekly, Whittaker has said that incomingweeks, the popular spot nearWestbrook Beach would have treesplanted.
“I have spoken to RamuGovenderfromParksandGardensandmetwithJeeva Pillay from the civic as well asDA councillor for the beaches GeoffPullan. Ihavealsohiredaprofession-al landscaper.”
Pullan confirmed a meeting thattook place and said that plans wouldbe going through “very soon”.
“Wehavebeenshownwheremostof thetreeswouldbeandwehavealsoaskedTongaatHulett tocleansomeoftheir bushes in the area.”
Pillay said it was agreed at themeeting that mainly Coral treeswould go up at the spot togetherwithdifferent types of fig bearing trees.
“This tree has an exceptionalbeautificationeffectespeciallyduringtheautumnmonthsandwillbeingen-eral good for the area. Therewill alsobe spaces thatwill be set aside for thepublic to once again be able to enjoy.”
Pillay said thata footpath thathadbeen created by those walking in thearea would also be enhanced.
“It looks like there will be about100 trees that will [be planted] ac-cording toWhittaker’s professional.”
gether with all public from the areaand him to talk about these issues. Itis vital that heunderstandsweare anactive, participating community. Wewill always hold the powers that beaccountable.”
Whittaker said that while he didhold one public meeting specificallyfor Westbrook residents at their re-quest,hewouldholda largermeetingsoon.
“We will definitely be holding ameeting for all the areas and affectedparties to discuss the various issuesbehind the tree issues and the devel-opment,” said Whittaker.
WEEKLY REPORTER
A DURBAN policeman was involved in a collision witha provincial ambulance vehicle at the weekend.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa)head Prem Balram, paramedics were dispatched toUmdloti Beach Road, after receiving reports of a collision.
“Five people had to be transported to hospitalafter an Opel Corsa collided with a provincial ambulance. The driver of the Opel Corsa, who is a Durbanbased policeman, sustained critical injuries and wastrapped in the vehicle. The road had to be closed toallow paramedics to stabilise him before removinghim from the vehicle.”
Balram added that both vehicles were travellingin opposite directions at the time of the collision.
“It is alleged that the driver of the Opel Corsa failed to negotiate a bend and collided with the ambulance however this cannot be confirmed,” added Balram,

Several Grade 11 and 10 alsoparticipated in a bridge buildingworkshop.
“The aim of Protec is to prepareyoung people, with the interestand ability, for successful entry into engineering, science and technological careers and this workshop gave the opportunity to testtheir skills and aptitude in engineering concepts,” said Takis.
She said that using strips ofbalsa wood and Pratley Quicksetpupils designed and built a bridgesthat could carry a heavy load. Thetop two teams will participate in
the SAICE KZN Schools BridgeBuilding Competition in August.
The Grade 11 pupils also participated in a water conservationworkshop where they learnedabout the scarcity of water, properties of water, and the importance of conserving this valuableresource.
This interactive workshop involved a variety of fascinating experiments, video clips and presentations. They also enjoyed a visitfrom Science Centre who conducted practical demonstrations to explain concepts such as Newton’ssecond law and acceleration dueto gravity.
The matrics focused on academic enrichment in math, physical science and life science. Thehighlight was a visit to UKZNWestville campus where they attended informative presentationsby the college of Engineering, Science and Agriculture and the college of Health Sciences. OUR humanity seems to be slowlydisappearing here in South Afri-ca.AndIcanunderstandwhythis
is happening.Therearevarious issuesthatcontrib-
utetothestateinwhichwefindourcoun-try. You and I barely experience, thisdearreader.Mostof thepeoplewhoreadthisnewspaperliveinahomethatiselec-trified.
Iamsureyourresponsewouldbe:“Ofcourse it is Kaveel.”
Youhave running, potablewater and
a toilet. You have food to eat. You havewarmth. You have so much.
In the townships, while there are agreat number of ablution facilities, it isnot like the one’s you and I have.
I don’t have to share the loo with ahundred other families. I don’t have toshare a massive wash basin with 80neighbours. I have my own sink. I havemy own home.
I live a somewhat privileged life.I’ve had this perspective for many
years. And to a great extent, until thesedisparages are corrected, I always will.
In my opinion it is due to these rea-sons that there is somuch hate runningthrough the veins of our people. Thishate came the fore last week.
Education - this is vital for me. It issomething I have been given. In SouthAfrica, thevastmajorityofourpeopledonot experience college life.
They barely experience school life.Becausethereare14yearsoldwhohaveyounger siblings to provide for and how
canoneexpect their 80-year-old grannyto work after all?
Ibelievea lackofopportunityanded-ucation has faltered the opinion of thepeople in our country.
And the king - probably one of the la-ziestandmost inciting individuals inourpoliticalspectrum-isusingthistohisad-vantage.
Heisusingthedesperateandthepoorand taking their frustrations and direct-ing it somewhere very far into the past.
WeareAfricans - all of uswho inhibitthis land.Butthekingandhiscroniesde-cide to create this massive problem.
Perhaps it is a distraction to divert usfromthefactthatourpresident’sperson-alhomestead issueswere finally comingto a head.
Paranoid you might say - realisticwould be my response.
We, the advantaged few in our coun-try, have to start doingmore. We cannotcast judgement fully onto those whohave reacted so violently and negatively
to foreigners living in our country. There is no excuse for the violence
and the intimidation that has stemmedfromthis ideologicalmisgiving.BUT,weHAVE to start doing more.
Wehave to realise this issue is part ofa much bigger picture.
A picture of poverty, frustration andanger.Howdoesafamilyhaveanydigni-ty in thiscountrywhentheycannotdefe-cate with some form of privacy and hy-giene?
Wehave to, asmiddle class SouthAf-rica, take heed of these challenges. Wehave power. We move a lot within oureconomy and it about timewe stood ourground.
Reform is required and a great dealneedstobeputintoeducatingourpeopleinto the social norms we are familiarwith.
What has happened is nothing lessthan wrong, but it is time we stoppedcommenting and judging and start act-ing.
Save our souls
I AM saddened by the way South Africans are behaving. I just feel that this
live in peace with each other.ZILLAH FRANCIS
Let us live in peace with eachother

is going to be an eye foran eye and innocentpeople are going to diebecause African countries are now going to beat war unnecessarily.
We had the greatestleader in the world(Nelson Mandela) whogave 27 years of his lifeso that we could beunited as one nation.
Today he turns in hisgrave because his sacrifice will not be worth itas the very people heset free are now turningon those who havecome to seek a betterlife for their families;they are people who ranaway from oppressionin their own countries.
Imagine if South Africans were not able totravel to neighbouringstates if the xenophobia was reversed.

What isrecklesslending?
YOUoftenhear in themediaabout reck-less lending by credit providers wheretheyprovidecredit toyouwhenyoucan-not afford the repayments.
Credit is anything froma loan topur-chasingfurnitureorclothingonaccountwhere you pay monthly instalments.
The National Credit Act requires allcredit providers to perform an afforda-bilityassessmentonyoubeforegrantingyoucredit.Putsimplyyoumusthavesuf-ficientincomeavailableafterallyourex-penses to repay the debt.
In many instances credit providerseither do not perform an affordabilityassessment or “massage” the numbersto suit their requirements despite thefact youdonot earn enough tomake therepayments.
This inevitably leads toyou falling in-to arrears and the debt collectors’ startcalling you and harassing you for pay-ments. Inmany cases you borrowmoremoney tomeet the existing repaymentsand the debt spiral begins.
Fortunately the National Credit Actprovides protection to consumers whoare victims of reckless lending and yourdebts can be written off.
Registered debt counsellors are re-quiredtoinvestigatereckless lendingonyourbehalf and request documentationfrom the credit provider to confirm youwere able to afford the credit when youapplied.
Where you could not afford the re-paymentsthedebtcounsellingcanbringacaseof reckless lendingonyourbehalfand apply for the loan to be written offand repayments refunded.
If you think you are a victim of reck-less lending contact one of the profes-sional consultants at National DebtCounsellors on 087 727 9728 or visittheir website www.nationaldebtcoun-sellors.co.za.
