Classical approach to coach agile teams

Rahul Dravid, former Indian Cricketer and Captain

Classical or copy book style

We saw few delectable cricketing strokes…

How about these?

Aren’t they different from

what saw earlier?

I wondered if Rahul Dravid would ever fit into modern day cricket formats with such unorthodox looking strokes dominating 22 yards

Remember, what Rahul Dravid and his senior co-players of Indian team said when T20 first came into fray

“This format is for young blood”

And they all kept themselves out of first T20 world cup in 2007

Lead:Rajasthan Royals• Young & inexpensive

players

Coach:Rajasthan Royals• Built strong individuals

and a unit

Coach:U-19 / India-A team• 15 consecutive wins

Mentor:Delhi Daredevils• In top 3, rare to see

2008 - 2016

What am I up to?

If Rahul Dravid being so classical throughout his international career, can adapt to new format and be a successful captain, coach & mentor for teams who invent new unorthodox strokes everyday,

why not my friend coach agile teams

A classic Project Manager

who has the passion and ability to adapt,

can coach Agile teams

Coach’s checklist for a team

Fundamentals

Self confidence

Believe in process

Stick to basics

Mindset

Adapt Dare to experiment

InnovateAccept

• Does the team has required skills?• Can the team think analytically?• Does the team understand what is expected out of them?• Can they visualize how the output should look?

Fundamentals

Minimal technical corrections keeping individual’s strengths in-tact

Know what your team is made of

• Is there a hierarchy in the team?• Can a junior member speak out openly?• Are the opinions restricted to experienced members?• Does team has the urge to be super stars, irrespective of their role?

Self confidence

Freedom to express themselves, staying calm & focused, switch on & off, long-term associations, positive pep talks.

Confidence comes from not always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong

• Do they understand need for a process?• Is there some process in place?• Do they see it working?• What do they think is required to make it work?• Do they think a change in process is required?

Believe in process

Aim is to make “process” is not a taboo anymore in the team

Explain process without using word process, it’s everywhere

• Do they skip grammar when you need to speak fast or type fast?• Do they remember committing a mistake when basics were not

followed?

Stick to basics

Stick to basics for long-term benefits

Advancements are built on basics

• Do they like something new happening in the project?• Do they think “new” will bring “new results”?

Mindset

Open and curious mind to see and welcome changes, from all sources

Advantages of being open to new

• Is the team game for a change?• What makes you think change is for good for the team?

Accept

Evaluate, discuss and accept the changes

Acceptance is half won, but needs stories, both success and failed ones

• What were the preparations made when they had relocated from Chennai to Chicago in Dec/Jan?

• How did their children adapt to new school?• What elements do they think are key for faster adaption –

preparations, mindset

Adapt

Quick adaptations may backfire

Structured and gradual adaptations for permanent results

Dare to experiment

• Is the team open for experimentation?• Is the team worried about failures?• Are there any new trials done in the way they work in past few

months?

Experiments makes way for new ideas, in turn dividends

Accidental experiment resulted in a battery that never drains

• Is there a ecosystem for sharing ideas?• Are ideas shared get discussed?• Does the team think out of the box?• Does team get to see ideas getting implemented elsewhere (peer

groups)?

Innovate

Ecosystem to innovate, value it and implement

Cost of innovation is not worth calculating
