«Spetses Classic Yacht Race 2012» (SPETSES, GREECE 21 - 24 JUNE 2012)

For the second year in a row, the Yacht Club of Greece organized the Spetses Classic Yacht Race 2012 which was held in the picturesque island of Spetses between June 21st and 24th with CHIVAS Regal as the GOLD SPONSOR.

THE SPETSES CLASSIC YACHT RACE IN NUMBERS

• 50 participating yachts (21 Classic Boats, which were divided into three categories: Vintage (built prior to 1949), Classic (built between 1949-1975) and Spirit of Tradition (built after 1975) as well as 17 Aegean Classic Schooners and 12 Open Boats/Lateens)

The award was presented by Christophe Lemarié, CEO of Pernod Ricard Hellas to skipper Stratis Andreadis and the crew of Glaramara (built in 1947). The Gold Sponsor of «Spetses Classic Yacht Race 2012» was CHIVAS REGAL. Accomodation Sponsor was «Poseidonion Grand Hotel», Supporters were «Folli Follie» who presented winners with a watch from the Regatta collection and the athletic company «ASICS». The yacht Club of Greece proudly announces the second “Spetses Classic yacht Race 2012” which will be held from 21 June to 24 June, 2012, following the great success of the 1st Spetses Classic yacht Race in autumn 2011, featuring some of the most renowned classic yachts in Greece against the backdrop of the picturesque historic island of Spetses in the Argosaronic Gulf in Greece. Last year, in total, 12 classic yachts (the oldest of which was built during the 1920s) amongst them the 8-meter Flamingo of 1928, the J-class Candida, Glaramara of 1947 and 11 caiques took part. Amongst the caiques, were the locally built “Afroessa”, “Maridha” and “Kirki”. Whilst for this year, already participation in the race has grown to over 100% with more than 50 applicants already!

From the start, the aim of the organizers was to lay the foundation for a world-class race that, starting in 2011 and annually thereafter, which would attract some of the best and most attractive vessels in the world and traditional Aegean schooners to Spetses. In the words of Alexandros Papadongonas, Chairman of the yacht Club of Greece: “Our aim is to create one of the best classic yacht races in the world, based on the high quality of the organization and the rational of the Spetses Classic yacht Race”. In addition to this, many affiliated yacht clubs, with the yacht Club of Greece, have been invited to join in this year’s race.

Through our presence we pay respect to team spirit, camaraderie and fair play as these are brought to life by the efforts of skippers and crews during the race; as well as to heritage and authenticity; values that Chivas Regal is committed to and supports over time”. Furthermore the gold sponsor of the CHIVAS REGAL, initiated a special cross-category award, named “Spirit of Chivalry - Chivas Honour Award - Spetses Classic yacht Race 2012” which will celebrate and honor the above mentioned values .

This year the race is planned as a 4-day event which will mark the opening of the season and it will include three divisions: a) Classic yachts - divided into Vintage (prior to 1939), Classic (post - 1939) and Spirit of Tradition (yachts which have been built according to the classical yacht standards), b) Aegean Classic Schooners (locally known as caiques) who raced for the first time last year alongside the Classic yachts and c) Lateens.

During the 4-day event, the racing will be a mix of offshore courses and buoy racing between the straits of the Peloponnese and Spetses Island, followed by a great social calendar.

In 2011 more than 500 people gathered to watch the race from the legendary verandah of the magnificent Poseidonion Grand Hotel. This year, the interactivity with the spectators on the Poseidonion’s renowned verandah will be enhanced through live commentary of the race and giant TV screens. As Antonis Vordonis, CEO of the Poseidonion Grand Hotel and skipper of Tincano (Philippe Rhodes 1936) remarked: “We are especially honoured and proud to be an integral part of the Spetses Classic yacht Race. For us, the complete restoration of this historic hotel and landmark of Spetses goes hand in hand with its efforts to be a magnate for important cultural, social and athletic events which will lead to the rejuvenation of the island”.

An important aspect of the Spetses Classic yacht Race 2012 is the collaboration with the NGO “Archipelagos” which will offer to all participants and local fishermen an “Eco-Navigation” seminar which is a protocol for environmentally sustainable boating practices which aims to minimize the trace left on the marine environment by all boats. Finally, a part of the proceeds of the race will be donated to the local ShipBuilders Association on the island of Spetses, dedicated to the preservation and continuation of this art and integral part of the naval tradition of the island. As Stratis Andreadis, sailing world champion ranked 29th in the world Match Race category, poetically remarked: “The Spetses Classic yacht Race brings together the experience of three generations of yachtmen, bound together by the expertise and know –how of the yacht Club of Greece, which constitutes an important component of its success”.

For the second year in a row, the yacht Club of Greece organized the Spetses Classic yacht Race 2012 which was held in the picturesque island of Spetses between June 21st and 24th with CHIVAS Regal as the GOLD SPONSOR.

50 yachts took place in the Regatta, from Greece and abroad, divided into three sub-categories according to their age: 21 Classic Boats, which were categorized into Vintage (built prior to 1949), Classic (built between 1949-1975) and Spirit of Tradition (built after 1975) as well as 17 Aegean Schooners and 12 Open Boats.

During the award ceremony, which was held in front of the magnificent Poseidonion Grand Hotel, on Sunday 24th June, the Commodore of the yacht Club of Greece, Mr. Alexandros Papadogonnas, stated: “It is with great pleasure and honour that I stand before you having concluded yet another excellent race, which we hope will be included from now on in the international calendar of classic racing events. I applaud all skippers and crews who raced and brought the event to such a high level of excellence”.

Antonis Vordonis, CEO «Poseidonion Grand Hotel», which was the preferred vantage point for the spectators to appreciate the race noted “we are honoured to be part of this event and to be able to show the world a different face of Greece. From the beginning our aim was to re-instate Poseidonion Grand Hotel as hub of cultural, political and social activities which will enhance the development of Spetses island as a whole.”

A further important aspect of the Spetses Classic yacht Race 2012 was the collaboration with the NGO “Archipelagos” which offered all participants and local fishermen an “Eco-Navigation” seminar which is a protocol for environmentally sustainable boating practices which aims to minimize the trace left on the marine environment by all boats. Additionally skippers were presented with a “blue passport” a guide to preserving and protecting the marine environment, complete with a logbook where they can note findings and sightings, thus aiding in the research of “Archipelagos”.

Finally, a part of the proceeds of the race was donated to the local ShipBuilders Association on the island of Spetses, dedicated to the preservation and continuation of this art and integral part of the naval tradition of the island.

Concluding, the Mayor of Spetses, Mr. Panagiotis Lyrakis thanked all the participants for their efforts and for a magnificent race and announced the creation of the Poseidonion – Spetses yacht Club.
