The IslandCity

Alameda isa community of stately homes, ex-cellent shopping and fine restaurants.A quiet and uni-que island city located in San Francisco Bay,Ala meda isthe center of pleasure boating in NorthernCalifornia.

Originally a peninsula covered with oak treesand inhabited by peaceful Indians, Alameda waspartof a Spanish grantto LuisPeralta in the early1880's.Ittook the Gold Rushto start real growth, however. Inthe1850's,many of the trees covering the Island were cutand used to build the City of San Francisco, while atthesame time, Alameda's farms fed the great populationinflux brought by the rush for gOld. By the 1870'sand1880's, many of the San Francisco's newly wealthywere establishing fine Victorian homes in the town, and Alameda acquired a reputation as an excellentresidential area, one that stands today.

Alameda's history has always been closelylinked with the sea. Thetown played a major role in thegrowth of West Coast Maritime industries, primarily inship building, outfitting and repairs. TheAlaska SalmonFleet (the largest in the world at the time) had itswinterport here. Alameda became a true "island" in 1902with the opening of the Tidal Canal. TheCanal madethe Island circumnavigable.

Alameda long has been known as one of thebetter residential areas of the Bay Area. Lovely homes, complimented by fine sandy beaches and a largeassortment of parks, combined with several excellentshopping centers and areas, make the town a desira-ble location in which to live.

Residents(and many visitorsas well) are famil-iar with the number of outstanding restaurants, many ofwhich are located over the water along theOakland I Alameda Estuary.Seafoods of all kinds area major bill of fare since the town is a natural wateroriented community.

Located 12 miles east of San Francisco and420 miles north of LosAngeles, Alameda isseparatedfrom the EastBay Area by the Estuary.Withthewestsideof the Island bordering the Bay, the San Franciscoskyline is clearly visible, and some spectacular sun-setsmay be viewed from Ala meda beaches when thesun sets behind the skyscrapers of the "Manhattan ofthe West."

Withseveral excellent motels,Alameda isfullyequipped to accommodate the visitor. Some ac-commodations are adjacentto dockage forthe manypeople who come to the Island by boat.

THE FIRSTTRANSP ACIFICRACE

The Transpacific Race, the famous biennialevent from Los Angeles to Honolulu, was originallyplanned to be started from San Francisco, and, strangely enough, one of the three yachts in that firstrace in 1906 reached Kauai before going on to Hon-olulu.

Thefounder of the Transpac was Clarence W.MacFarlane of Honolulu, a yachtsman so enthusiasticthat he was called the "Lipton of Hawaii."

He was often seen sailing around Honoluluharbor with King Kalakaua, the islands' last monarch,or Governor Sanford Dole as his guest.

MacFarlane hit upon the idea of inviting theSan Francisco fleet to race to the islands, a proposalthat had been tossed aboutas early as1883.Therewasno difficulty in sailing downwind to Hawaii, pushed bythe gentle trade winds, but the WestCoast yachtsmenwondered how long it would take them to beat therway home after such a race. MacFarlane decided hehad to prove that the west-east trip was not so difficult.

He planned to sail his yacht, LA PALOMA,toSan Francisco, and once he had proved his point, hefelt sure that a transpacific race would follow. LAPALOMAleft Honolulu on April 14,1906.Aboard wereMacFarlane; Mosher,a navigator from the steamships;Spinnine, an Irishfirstmate, Pangelly, the Spanish cook;and two deck hands - a Samoan named Bill, and aHawaiian lad named Jimmy Grube.

The trip took a month. On May 15,LAPALOMAtied up at Meiggs Wharf. There were no boats in theharbor, not even the ever-present fishing boats. Nocarriages were in sight, nor any streetcars. Army tentswere up at the Presidio..The crew took no particularnotice. The port physician, Dr.Hobson, came by andwhile clearing the vessel he said to MacFarlane,"Where do you plan to stay, Clarence?" The skipperwas tired and salt-encrusted after his long voyage. Hereplied, "I think I'll go to the Occidental Hotel, take ahot bath, eat a steak, and go to sleep."

Thedoctor was taken aback. Hetold MacFar-lane, "You'll go a hell of a long way to find the Occi-dental Hotel." It was then that the crew of LAPALOMAlearned of the San Francisco earthquake and firewhich had struck the city four days after their ship leftHonolulu.

MacFarlane was not easily discouraged.Realizing that it was a bad time to promote anythingbut the Red Cross in San Francisco, he sailed down toSan Pedro, the harbor town for LosAngeles. There hefound two takers for his race. One was LURLINE,an80-foot keel schooner originally built in San Franciscoby Wallace Turnerfor the sons of the sugar and ship-ping magnate, Claus Spreckels. She was now ownedby Captain H. H. Sinclair, commodore of the South

Coast Yacht Club, a predecessor of the present LosAngeles Yacht Club. Another was the 112-footschooner, ANEMONE,belonging to Charles Tuttof Col-orado Springs, a member of the New York Yacht Club.Thethree began their 2,400-mile race from San Pedroon June 11,1906.

After fifteen days at sea, MacFarlane foundhimself looking in vain for Diamond Head. Mosher, thenavigator, suggested darkly that perhaps theHawaiian Islands had sunk. All of them had beenformed upon a range of volcanic mountains, re-member. MacFarlane was just about to turn aroundand head for California when Jimmy Grube sightedKealia harbor in Kauai. LAPALOMAwas only Slightly offcourse. LURLINE,completing the passage in twelvedays, nine hours and fifty-nine minutes, won the race.ANEMONEtook one day longer and was second. LAPALOMAwas last.

BIRTH OF SANFRANCISCO BAYYACHT CLUBS

Around San Francisco's Golden Gate, yachtclubs came and went in the early years. The first one,the San Francisco Yacht Club, lasted through threeseasons, then underwent a temporary collapse. Theproblem was financing. The first year, 1869, "life mem-berships" were solicited for $50, and the proceedswent toward erecting a small clubhouse at the LongBridge. But almost everyone was a "life member," sothat annual income from the dues amounted to verylittle. In addition, there was a misapprehension as tothe nature of the new yacht club. Active sailors com-plained that those who came to the clubhouse to eatchowder on Sundays thought the boats were free forany member's use.

The club folded in 1871with a flourish. A grandClambake was held atSausalito and executed in suchstyle that, when the bills came in, the club was bank-rupted beyond hope of recovery. The next year theproperty was sold to the Central Pacific Railroad, andthe year following, the club was organized anew bythirteen old members. The new outfit was an inactiveone, failing to hold any regattas. But at least it did nothave life members.

The membership was stirred into action andenlarged in 1876, inspired in part by the desire of localyachtsmen to participate in the Master Mariners' bigCentennial Regatta on the Fourth of July. The event wasa smash, with twenty-nine boats participating. Theschooner prize went to the 71-foot J. C. COUSINS, thesloop price to the EMERALD.The revival put the SanFrancisco Yacht Club on a sound footing, and the nextyear there were fifty members and eighteen yachts -eight schooners, five sloops, two yawls, and threesteamers.

A splinter group formed the Pacific Yacht Clubin 1876, and it sponsored popular schooner races dur-ing the 1880's. But the membership was ostentatious, more interested in pa rties ashore than cruises afloat. The Pacific died quietly in the 1890's.

The Corinthian Yacht Club, founded in 1886,attracted a rougher, water-front crowd and its "so-cials" became infamous stag parties. One dinner fea-tured bear meat. The club chef had been bitten by asomewhat tame bear that hung about the place andhe retaliated by cooking the animal. The Corinthiansurvived that affair and is with us today, on CorinthianIsland at Belvedere.

~~======~~7Kauai Race is notBallena Bay's FirstBy Kathy Sulgit

Ballena Bay Yacht Club has been the host of, as.well as participating in, many races since its inception in1969, and for the past eleven years, BBYChas been ex-tremely active in racing on the San Francisco Bay.

Operating out of the Galleon Restaurant inAlameda, in 1971BBYChosted the Nationals for Conten-ders, as well as sponsoring a series of EI Toro racesthroughout the year.

After the opening of its first clubhouse in the rearof the Harbor master's office in Ballena Bay Harbor, 1972saw the start of the Whales Chase races that have con-tinued ever since, along with the Joe Brooks MemorialRace, an annual event off the Ballena Bay Yacht Harbor.Joe Brooks was one of the first charter members of theBallena Bay Yacht Club and erected our first raceplatform. An avid racer of his own Columbia 22, JoeBrooks drown outside the Golden Gate after the knock-down of a Cal 20 on which he was crewing. BBYCholdsthis race yearly in memorial of Joe Brooks.

BillHoisington, flying under the BBYCburgee, tookthe first place championship in the 1973YRAChampion-ship in his Columbia 24 PUFFIN,which is still berthed inBallena Bay.Thatsame year Ori Gooch, who can be seensailing his Santana 35 WILDHAIRin the Kauai Yacht Race, took second place in the Corinthian Mid-winters with hisGladiator HI SEA

Throughout 1974,asweather and the tides permit-ted, BBYChosted its locally renown "Friday Night Races",with racers departing from Ballena Bay at 6:30 p.rn.,rounding a not-too-distant mark, and flying back to Bal-lena Bay under full spinnaker colors.

In1975,Transpac entry HILARIA,skippered by MalWeaver, showed off her great potential throughout aseries of races on the bay, flying under BBYCburgee. MalWeaver can be seen in the Kauai Yacht Race in his San-tana 35 RACCOON STRAIGHTS,one of a class of Santana35's competing for a new record in racing to the Islands.

A close competitor of HILARIAin 1975,was custom50,AXELHEYST,SKIPPEREDBY Hal Nelson, founder of theKauai Yacht Race.A somewhat modified AXELHEYSTisoneof the hot boats to be watched in the race.

The Ballena Bay Yacht Club continued to host itsregular series of races, along with several YRARegattas. Then, in 1979, Hal Nelson approached the Ballena BayYacht Club with the idea of sponsoring a race from SanFrancisco to Kauai. It seemed like an idea whose timehad come. Thereseemed to be overwhelming favorableresponse to running this race. And it seemed that the SanFrancisco Bay Area, with its own colorful sailing history, was finally going to make its mark in the annals of sail-boat racing. The race course, somewhat shorter in dis-tance than the competitiveTranspac Race, would becomprised of running and broad reaching to the Islands.New records are expected to be achieved, and withthem, a new era of racing for the San Francisco Bay.

Alohato Kaua'i!

Welcome• •

Thisisan Island of infinite variety ... where youcan wander, picking shells on a lonely beach, or rock ata night club ... meet descendants of Hawai'ian roy-alty or immigrants from thePhilippines.looking for a newand better life ... go to the dry west where the cactusgrows and the cowboys ride, then look up at the wettestspot in the world ... Mt. Wai'ale'ale, which receives476 inches of rain a year.

We invite you to enjoy the changing colors of ourminiature grand canyon, or shop in our friendly storeswhere the goods may be brought here from the exoticeast ... or made by we-the-people of Kaua'i.

LIKE MOST VISITORS did you arrive on Kaua'i inLihu'e? The name of this town translated from theHawai'ian is "goose flesh." It had itsorigin in the name ofthe former residence of a chief from O'ahu, and has no-thing to do with its tropical, spring-like climate.

In fact, one of the reasons we love living here isthat the climate seldom varies more than 10degrees allyear round. In the "winter" the temperature ranges from65 to 75 degrees, the summer low is 75 and the tradewinds keep the high to a pleasant 85

WE WHO GREETYOU are a mixtureof races with nomajority, and therefore no minority to protestor complain. The native Hawai'ians have welcomed ... and inter-married with, each wave of Caucasians, Chinese,Japanese, Portuguese,Koreans and Filipinos who cameto find a new home here.

If you are a caucasian, you are a "Haole", (how-lee) a word that once meant stranger but now means anywhite person. Youwill find that while we tease each otherabout our racial backgrounds .. "Portuguese talk toomuch .. Chinese love to make money .. Japaneseare uptight .. Filipinos too emotional .. and Haolestry to run everything" .. we get along like afamily .. which means we occasionally fight with eachother!

We eat each other's ethnic foods, celebrateeach other's holidays (we get more that way) and weareverybody's native costume.

ENJOY OUR RAINBOW OF RACES!Enjoy too, our beautiful Island. Should you de-

cide to travel north out Lihu'e town you can see a mini-museum in the plantation town of Hanama'ulu ... orstop at the Wailua Marina for a trip up the river in an areaso sacred only the royalty were allowed there.

Aboard one of the river boats you will be "roy-ally" entertiined with songs, dances, storiesof the days ofancient Hawai'i.

When the riverboat docks, it will be like goingback to primeval times, walking along a path borderedby tropic vegetation to an enormous cave where theferns grow upside down from the damp ceiling.

Herethe crew will sing songs of exquisite beauty, gently amplified by the perfect acoustics of the cave. Wehad "chicken skin" .' .. bet you will--

CONTINUE NORTH through the Sleeping Gianttown of Kapa'a past rolling meadows until you reach themisty mountains of Hanalei.

See the "Nurses Beach"· (Lumaha'i) from themovie "SouthPacific" and on to the mysteriousend of theroad at Ha'ena.

18

RATHER GO WEST? Then first turn off at MaluhiaRoad (tunnel of trees) to picturesque Koloa town wherethe first sugar mill was built and on South to our "goldcoast" of Po'ipu Beach.

The sun usually shines there, even when MotherNature isgiving the restof Kaua'i a drink of rain to keep itgreen.

BACK TO THE MAIN HIGHWAY, and on down tothe tip.of the Island. (Kaua'i isshaped like an apple andthat would be the blossom end). Go past PortAllen, andthen on west to see the RussianFort, remains of Russia'seffort to take over the Island. It's being restored, but youcan see the stone walls, in the shape of a star.

Nest into neat little Waimea town, where Capt.Cook landed, and then you can wend your way up to themountain for a look at our miniature grandcanyon ... the magnificent cliffs and changing colorsof Waimea Canyon.

This is just the start of things to see and do onKaua'i.
