Inside this issue:
Excited voices filled the classroom in
anticipation for the Medieval Festival. 180
Children from 9 different Waldorf Schools,
their teachers, student teachers, volun-
teers and parents came together at
Michael Oak Waldorf School in
Kenilworth.
The afternoon started with finding our
“home base” in the class 10 Classroom. It
was in an old railway house, just under
the railway line.
The desks were used to make a cosy “room” for the girls (under the blackboard) and the boys sorted themselves out in no time. A spot was left for
Mrs. Dawes in the middle. Then we were ready to explore the rest of the school and find the friends we made during the Greek Olympics.
The children were asked to come in their oldest clothes, to represent the villains from medieval times. The Class Seven child stands on the Rubicon
between childhood and adolescent. They look up to their idols, famous soccer players or musicians. They rub against each other and society; they
would like to be heard. They brim with ideas. During the English lessons a suggestion was made to start a real school newspaper. This paper would
have an uncensored column of wants and needs. During the Chemistry lesson the brightest idea was to burn all the Math text books, weighing the
ash and studying the colour of the flame would justify this experiment. Strong leadership is required and a good King and Queen will lead these
special villains to knighthood.
The Medieval Festival gave the children, through doing, this opportunity. The children stretched their imagination, their skills were tested, and new
skills were learned. This included how to socialize with each other. They had the opportunity to dance, medieval style, with rhythm and form. They
built human castles, juggled with 3 balls and used the poi. The children learnt to fight with sticks (swords). They made a candle and drew intricate
forms. Cooperation was tested during the obstacle course and the fishy- fishy game required accuracy with spear throwing. In between these
activities food was served by the parents of the different schools.
The closing ceremony was a feast provided by the parents of Michael Oak and Constantia Waldorf Schools. During this feast we were entertained
by the different schools and
each Castle showed at the
dance they learned, this time
dressed in the finest clothes.
The girls arrived in beautiful
dresses and the boys were
smartly dressed too. Now not
as villains but as ladies and
lords all the children were
knighted by the mighty sword
of King Arthur and at his side
was his Queen.
Allow me to express my thanks
to all the parents who helped
so willingly, making this years
Medieval Festival a success.
Wilma Dawes
Class Seven Teacher.

High School Maths
On Monday the 16 April, 36 of our high school students entered the UCT Maths Competition. The competition is held every year and some 8000 students from schools in the Western Cape participate either writing as individuals or in pairs. It was started by Prof. John Webb as an event to promote the study of mathematics in schools and there are now schools coming from as far afield as Vredendal
and George to participate.
Prizes are awarded to the top 3 pairs and the top ten individuals in each grade. We have received notice that one of our Class 9 pairs, Art Wynberg-van der Lingen and Georg Janowski, are in the top three pairs. Their actual position will be announced at the
prize-giving on the 7th June. So watch this space!

Calling all Waldorf parents! Imagine being unemployed and unable to pay your school fees? Please help just one parent in a poorer community by buying a R100 voucher. Through DreamWorker’s Link of Love programme, the unemployed parent will work in their child’s school for the day. Clean-ing, repairing, helping. They earn R100, R50 of which goes into their school fees account. The school benefits and so do the parents! Please help us to get South Africa working, one person, one day at a time. Visit www.dreamworker.org.za, and click on Link of Love or contact Waldorf parent,

Home needed: Gillian Barton and her daughter Emma, a former Waldorf pupil and now a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner and acupuncturist, are looking for a home in Cape Town as from September 2012. Ideally this would be to care for someone's home, pets and garden for 6 months to a year, or then to find a 2-bedroom cottage or flat, at a reasonable rental. They are both non-smokers, responsible, caring people who will look after
things with lots of TLC. Please contact Gillian at gilly.barton@gmail.com or 072 206 0594 for more information and/or references.
Speech and Hearing Test Reminder
Our speech and hearing tests will take place on the Monday
the 4th and Tuesday the 5th June and then again on the
11th and 12th June with Patsy Gevisser.
The cost of these are R65 per assessment.

Have you recently upgraded your laptop?
Please read this note before you send your
old machine for recycling
There are a few students who are in their final
years of senior school who have limited or no
access to computer at home. While much of the
school work at our school can be done without
computer, this becomes harder in Grades 12 & 13
where pupils have much longer research
assignments for homework. While the lab at
school enables access at school, it is difficult to
execute all the work in the limited hours available
at school.
If you are willing to pass on an aging yet func-
tional lap top, please contact Jeanne on
