LOVE KITCHEN MINISTRY
The “Love Kitchen
Ministry” name is a
take-off on the Love
Kitchen story that
was on TV-about
twin sisters Helen
Ashe and Ellen
Turner from Knox-
ville, TN who started
a Love Kitchen back
in 1984.
The Love Kitchen
Ministry’s purpose is
to SERVE- “serve
Jesus Christ by
serving others”
following the last of
our Five Essentials
of Christian
Discipleship.
The “Love Kitchen
Ministry” goal is to
prepare and deliver
meals to those who
have had a “heavenly
interruption” in
their lives, such as a
death in the family,
long-term illness,
hospitalization, a
birth of a new baby,
or as the needs arise.
The Love Kitchen
Ministry is starting
its ninth year in
God’s ministry. God
has richly blessed
this ministry with
many willing and
capable helping
hands, cooking,
making cookies and
delivering.
In the year 2011, Illa
and Donna met with
Deb Moore and Jo
Ann Meyer from Our
Redeemer for infor-
mation on how to
start a food
ministry. Donna
invited Marie Kruger
to be part of this
new ministry. We
met with Pastor Greg
for help in getting
the Love Kitchen
started and he
suggested the name
“THE LOVE KITCH-
EN”. On April 16,
2011, we made our
very first meals for
the new food minis-
try.
The ministry has,
over the course of
nine years, contacted
and delivered many
meals that number
well over 100 a year.
If you know of some-
one who might need
some encouragement
and caring, please feel
free to sign out a meal
and take it to them, or
let one us know and
we will deliver the
meal for you.
We thank God for the
blessings we have
received, and we pray
for God’s guidance as
we go forward into our
ninth year of the
service of the Love
Kitchen.
If you wish to become
part of this ministry by
preparing meals,
baking cookies,
delivering meals, or
monetary support,

“How the Garcia Girls Lost Their
Accents” by Julia Alvarez
The Garcias—Dr. Carlos (Papi), his
wife Laura (Mami), and their four
daughters Carla, Sandra, Yolanda,
and Sofia—belong to the upper-
most echelon of Spanish Caribbean
society, descending from the
conquistadores. Their family
compound adjoins the palacio of
the dictator’s daughter.
So when Dr. Garcia’s part in a
coup attempt is discovered, the
family must flee. They arrive in
New York City in 1960 to a life far
removed from their existence in
the Dominican Republic. Papi has
to find new patients in the Bronx.
Mami, far from the compound and
the family retainers, must find
herself.
Meanwhile, the girls try to lose
themselves—by forgetting their
Spanish, by straightening their
hair and wearing fringed bell
bottoms. For them, it is at once
liberating and excruciating being
caught between the old world and
the new, trying to live up to their
father’s version of honor while
accommodating the expectations
of their American boyfriends.
Please join us on Saturday,
February 8 at 9:30 am in the
Atrium and we discuss “How the
Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents”.

WALK TO JERUSALEM
Happy 2020!
Well, if you are like me your New Year’s resolution may already be a bust. Whether you are an avid exerciser or professional couch surfer this
is for you - Join us on our
WALK TO JERUSALEM.
What?!? (I know what you’re thinking.) It’s a collective
journey towards better physical and spiritual health.
As a Zion family we will
attempt to walk 6,410 miles (the equivalent of a straight shot from Sioux Falls to the
Holy Land) collectively.
We all know the health benefits of exercise (weight loss, stress management,
improved mental health, lowered blood pressure,
restorative sleep, cardiovascular health) but have you thought of the SPIRITUAL benefits of exercise? Time for prayer, marveling in the body God created, giving thanks for creation, sharing with a companion walker, growing
in our sense of stewardship for God’s gift of life, to name a few.
As we journey into the season
of Lent it’s a great time to explore walking as a spiritual practice that takes us closer
to God. Let me be clear – it
doesn’t have to be walking. Any type of physical movement counts. For simplicity on our journey we will use 20 minutes of activity as 1 mile. This can be ANY-THING – from weight lifting to household chores.
I encourage you to use one of the devotionals we will have available or your favorite Bible app and meditate on
that as you exercise.
Ready? We start Ash Wednes-
day, February 26 and end Easter morning, April 12.
Each week record your miles (or time) on a provided card and then return it to the drop
box at church. Let’s get ready to prepare for Jerusalem!
In Christ,
Parish Nurse Rachel

Zion Lutheran Church
describes Jesus in much more compelling ways. Jesus is righteous and humble (9:9). The blood of His covenant sets prisoners free (9:11). He is the church’s Cornerstone, Tent Peg and Battle Bow (10:4). Then, in a dramatic twist of fate, Christ is detested (11:8), sold for thirty pieces of silver (11:12), struck so His sheep scatter (13:7) and final-ly pierced and killed (12:10). In the end, however, God’s kingdom comes—finally and permanently, in pristine beauty (14:9, 16, 17).
Sermon plans are as follows:
Ash Wednesday Feb 26 “First Things First” (Zechariah 1:1–6)
Lent 1 Wed March 4 “It’s Tool
Zechariah: Your Kingdom Come!
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 26 and so does our empha-sis on the book of Zechariah. Zecha-riah: Your Kingdom Come! will be our Wednesday Midweek Lenten Series for 2020. The prophet Zecha-riah’s chief concern is God’s king-dom. Throughout all fourteen chapters, Zechariah joyfully and profoundly announces that God’s kingdom is coming through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus. The book of Zechariah abounds with stunning portraits of our Savior. Jesus serves as the prophet’s Interpreting Messenger throughout the first six chapters. Zechariah calls Jesus a “Shoot” (3:8; 6:12), “Servant” (3:8) and “Stone” (3:9). It is in his last six chapters, though, that the prophet
Time!” (Zechariah 1:18–21)
Lent 2 Wed March 11 “Silencing Satan” (Zechariah 3:1–10)
Lent 3 Wed March 18 “Who Will Take the Garbage Out?” (Zechariah 5:5–11)
Lent 4 Wed March 25 “First Secure Your Own Oxygen Mask” (Zechariah 8:20–23)
Lent 5 Wed April 1 “The Redeem-er’s Refinery” (Zechariah 13:1–2)
We have Wednesday worship oppor-tunities at both 10am and 6:30pm during our Lenten season. I hope you take this time to learn more about Zechariah and his message for us today. This Lent, rejoice, for God’s kingdom comes to you…through Jesus our Lord!
