Carlton Speak 2018 Carlton Public School E-Bulletin
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to another exciting term at Carlton PS. We start the term running with our Kindergarten Orientation.
I’m looking forward to meeting all of the new students and parents in our school community for 2019. As usual,
many important events will take place this term so please reference the calendar and plan well. The coming weeks
involve Kindy Orientation, Selective High School on-Line applications, School Disco and Stage 1 Bounce Gymnastics.
Relieving Principal
A huge thank you goes to Ms Rasmussen for her exceptional leadership as Relieving Principal. By all reports the
school continued to operate smoothly and everyone pitched in to assist when needed. Along with ensuring that
quality teaching and learning continued, Ms Rasmussen organised the installation of 12 air conditioning units and the
beginning of our COLA project. Many thanks and excellent work!
OC-Placements
Congratulations to our Year 4 students that have been offered placements in a variety of OC classes across the
region. It is great to see them being recognised for their commitment and dedication. Often parents are undecided
about taking up a placement in another school with very valid concerns. It is our belief that we can offer an
educational service equal to any OC school and would prefer that the children completed their education at Carlton
PS.
Some points to consider:
Carlton PS offers a wide range of enrichment programs that cater for the skills and talents of our students and
provide them with the opportunity to excel. These include Extension Classes, Maths Olympiad, STEM, Public
Speaking, Chess, Debating and a wide range of sports programs. Additionally, we offer Think Tank- a problem solving
club that encourages critical and creative thinking, Primary links program which enables Stage 3 students to attend
High School one day a week to participate in enrichment programs, A Technology Team, a wide range of creative
arts- cultural performance groups, choir, band and dance groups.
Carlton PS offers many leadership programs for the senior students. These include SRC, Peer Mediation, Prefects,
Library Monitors, Mini Fete and Kindergarten Buddies. These programs develop our students into responsible,
reliable and resilient students who show empathy for others and develop a sense of community and helping others.
Over the past 15 years, Carlton has had a proud tradition of success in students gaining entry to Selective High
Schools. On average 28 students are successful each year in gaining entry to Selective High Schools. These schools
include North Sydney Boys and Girls, Sydney Boys and Girls, St George Girls, Sydney Tech and Caringbah High. Many
students who receive OC Placement choose to stay at Carlton because of opportunities that are offered. These
students are not disadvantaged in any way and our records show that they all gain placement to the Selective High
School of their choice.
Currently we are in a Community of Schools with Hurstville, Hurstville South and Mortdale. All the teachers are
involved with the highly acclaimed 4C program, teaching children highly effective communication, collaboration,
creativity and critical thinking skills.
We understand that it is a very difficult decision to accept an OC offer so we hope that the children stay at CPS with
their friends and experienced teachers.
Term 4 - Week 1 Thursday 18 October 2018
Only 64 days of left of Term 4
An inspiring phone call
It was my great pleasure to receive a phone call from Mr Pendlebury. Mr Pendlebury is a bus driver who transported
our Stage 3 students on their recent trip to Canberra. He stated that in his three decades as a bus driver he had never
felt more respected and appreciated as he did by our students and staff. It is the first time he has ever contacted a
school in his career to congratulate the students but he was so impressed by their maturity he felt strongly about
contacting me. Special congratulations go to our Stage 3 Students and staff. These types of phone calls are one of the
many reasons I love being the Principal of our fantastic school.
Regards
Stephen Vrachas Principal
On Thursday 25 October 2018 60 students from Stage 3 will be attending the Invictus Games. Students are to wear
their sports uniforms including suitable enclosed shoes for physical participation in activities. Students are not
required to bring a school hat or bag as they will be provided with a cap and bag. Students can bring a small recess
in zip-lock bags to be disposed of at the end of the day. Students will be provided with a sandwich, piece of fruit and
a bottle of water for lunch. Students are required to be at school by 6.55am as the bus will be leaving promptly at
7am. In the event of unpredictable weather the event will still go ahead and it is advised that students bring a
raincoat/spray jacket in case – no umbrellas. We look forward to an exciting day!
NIGHT OF THE STARS: Good News! Night of the Stars will is back in Term 4. Auditions will be held Tuesday November 6 and the concert night will be November 28. Students must be ready to audition on the designated day. As always, we are very excited about watching the talented students at Carlton Public School perform. Miss Flowers and Mrs O'Grady
The 4C’s Training Continues Across our Community of Schools-
Today all our Language teachers visited Hurstville Public School to work with the Language Teachers from Mortdale, Hurstville and Hurstville South Public Schools. Staff members from the Four Schools worked together to see how we can use the 4C’s strategies to enhance the teaching of languages. What a fantastic example of collaborative learning and excellent communication!

Helping Hands Newsletter Term 4 October 18th
Welcome back everyone! We hope everyone had a joyful, relaxing holiday and are feeling
refreshed as we come back into Term 4!
Vacation Care
During the holiday period here at Helping Hands the last two weeks have been filled with
some very exciting activities and events as we ran our Vacation Care program! A highlight
was our excursion to Wannabes Playtown where the children explored different careers
and role play scenarios in a little town built just for kids. Some of the rooms and activities
included a police station, a restaurant, a fire station, a grocery store, a radio station and more! The children had a great
time using their imaginations. We also had a visit from Build-a-Bear workshop where the children got the chance to create
their own bear to take home! What an enjoyable experience everyone had building and naming their own bear and
creating accessories for their bear afterwards! The Bubble Soccer and 3B sports incursions were also very popular. The
children had a ball (pun intended!) playing soccer against each other while wearing big plastic bubbles around them, and
engaged in a variety of different activities with 3B sports including a silent disco with their own set of headphones and
various other sporting activities and games. The children also enjoyed a trip to the movies to watch the movie ‘Small Foot’
as well as watching a Magic Show. Our in-house theme days were also a blast, allowing chances to extend on children’s
ideas.
Important reminder about the gate and access for after school care collection this term:
As we mentioned in the last newsletter, to ensure we are providing the safest environment for the children (after
discussions with some parents and the school) we have agreed that the gate next to the hall and canteen will stay shut and
locked after 3:30pm each day and we please ask you enter via the office entrance gate starting from Monday 22nd
October, Week 2.
Temporary change in location for After School Care for 2 afternoons:
Please note that due to the school needing to use our usual licensed space (the Hall) for both the Kindy Parent Information
Night (tonight, Thursday 18th Oct) and the School Disco (next Friday 26th Oct), we will be temporarily based in the
Kindergarten Classrooms in Block B. You will receive an email regarding this and attached will be a permission note for the
children to be based in a space that we are not usually licensed for. It is very important you get this back to us!
School Disco next Friday, 26 October 2018:
For Parents of children who are usually in our care on a Friday afternoon but wish for them to attend the school disco,
please be reassured that we are happy to work with the school to facilitate this happening. In order to authorise Helping
Hands to sign your child out of our care and into the care of the staff at the school disco, we will need you to complete an
extra-curricular activities permission form. As we will not be operating from our usual licensed space (the Hall) we will also
need a permission form for our relocation. We will email both forms to parents, and will also have a hard copy/printed
version available near the parent sign out area in the lead up to next Friday.
For Kindy and Year 1 students we will walk them to the hall and a school staff member will bring them back to our care.
Please indicate on the permission form if your child will be collected by you from the disco or if they will be coming back
into our care if you are picking up later than 5:30pm (as the junior disco runs from 4:30-5:30pm). For the senior children,
we can sign them out of our care (with permission from you), and walk them to the sausage sizzle at 5:30pm or disco at
6pm.
Please note that children without permission forms will not be allowed to attend the disco and will remain in our care until
signed out by their parent or guardian.
Junior Disco 3:30-5:30pm Grades K-2
Senior Disco 6-7:30pm Grade 3-6
Children in ASC who don’t have permission to attend disco or don’t wish to attend
Children will be signed into our care and allowed time to get changed and have a quick snack before being walked to the disco and signed out of our care at 3:30pm (only those with permission note!)
Children will be signed into our care and will remain there until either their parent collects them or we have permission to sign them out to attend sausage sizzle 5:30pm or Disco 6pm. Children will be allowed time to get changed during afternoon
Children in the care of Helping Hands as per usual, parents to collect and sign out on from Kindergarten rooms Block B.
