Origins  

1800  &  1900s  

•  Hospital  extended  twice    

•  Underwent  a  major  reconstrucGon

•  Growth  of  the  NHS  mid  twenGeth  century  -­‐  hospital  needed  to  expand  

1940s-­‐  1980s  •  1948:  plans  drawn  up  •  1951:  new  site  purchased  from  the  Pemberton  Estate  

•  1962:  first  phase  of  new  hospital  opened  

•  MRC  LMB  opened  •  1966:  contract  signed  for  second  phase
