Christmas in the UK Christmas is an annual holiday celebrated on the 25 December by Christians around the world.

It is also celebrated as a non-religious holiday by many people who enjoy family parties, gift sharing and large festive meals. Below are some other Christmas traditions that are enjoyed,

many dating back hundreds of years… The Christmas tree In the UK the tradition of putting up a Christmas tree was made popular by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, who bought a tree for Windsor Castle in 1841. Today they still appear in British homes and are decorated with lights, tinsel and hanging ornaments. Possibly the most famous tree in Britain is the one put up in Trafalgar Square in London, why not go and visit it? Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe Holly, Ivy and other greenery like Mistletoe was originally used in pre-Christian times to help celebrate the Winter Solstice Festival, it was also believed to help ward off evil spirits. Nowadays the greenery is used in Christmas displays and decorations as they have eye catching green leaves and bright red berries. Victorian Britain started the tradition of getting a kiss from someone standing underneath a piece of Mistletoe and many British homes still hang Mistletoe over doorways and hug and kiss people under it to welcome them in to their homes. Christmas crackers Invented in London by a confectioner known as Tom Smith, a Christmas cracker is a cardboard tube, wrapped in brightly coloured paper and twisted at both ends. There is a banger inside the cracker which makes a loud noise when the cracker is pulled apart by two people. Inside the cracker you’ll normally find a paper crown, a joke (often very cheesy!) and a small gift. When setting the table for Christmas dinner, a cracker is normally placed on, or next to, each plate to be pulled during the meal.

Christmas cards & presents A long standing tradition of the Christmas holiday is to show goodwill. Sending cards and presents to friends and family near and far shows that you remember and care about them. Presents are traditionally opened on Christmas Day (25 December) in Britain but many European countries celebrate with present opening on Christmas Eve (24 December).

Santa Claus/Father Christmas/ St. Nicholas There are several myths, stories and legends from around the world that reference a Father Christmas type figure. These days he is normally thought to be a cheery old bearded man dressed in red, who delivers presents on Christmas Eve with the help of a flying sleigh pulled by magical reindeer! Festive Food Christmas it a time for friends and family to come together. Very few people work on Christmas Day and many also have Boxing Day (26 December) off work as well so it’s a great time to come together for a catch up and a sociable meal. A traditional Christmas Day meal normally includes a roast meat like turkey, chicken or goose. This is then served with a variety of trimmings including stuffing balls, roasted or boiled vegetables (especially Brussels sprouts!), roast potatoes, Pigs in Blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon), gravy and a savoury sauce like cranberry or bread sauce. After the main course, Christmas pudding is often served. This is a traditional dessert made with alcohol soaked dried fruits, spices and dark sugar. Another tradition is to set the pudding on fire using brandy or rum when served. It is normally eaten with custard, cream or ice cream. Other desserts, normally served with a smaller meal in the evening (normally called a Christmas tea), include trifle or mince pies - a traditional pastry pie stuffed with a sweet dried fruit filling. As a special treat, a warm drink of mulled wine, cider or hot apple juice, or even a glass of sparkling wine, is served with meals.
