Colonial AmericaThe Southern Colonies

The 13 colonies that were settled were located up and down the east coast.

The southern colonies, the middle colonies and the New England colonies had different geography, climates and economies.

The geography of the Southern Colonies contains the Appalachian Mountains, piedmont, Atlantic Coastal Plain, good harbors and rivers.

The climate of the Southern Colonies was a humid climate.

The economy of the Southern Colonies was based on large farms or plantations, cash crops, wood products, and small farms. The larger farms and plantations relied on slave labor.

The Southern Colony social life was centered around plantations (slavery), mansions, indentured servants, very few cities, and few schools.

These slaves were captured and sold to slave traders. They were captured from west Africa.

The church of the Southern Colonies was the Church of England.

The Southern Colonies political life centered around counties within the colonies.

James Oglethorpe was an English lawmaker who was given a charter and he established the Georgia settlement.

Colonists in Georgia owed England’s government money. They worked in the colony to pay back England. These colonists were known as debtors.
