BUILDING STRUCTURES PROJECT 2 Structural Analysis of Bungalow

INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT

For Project 2, in a group of 3, we are required to design a 2 storeys bungalow using a combination of building layouts shown in category A and B. The bungalow consists of the following spaces:

1. Living Room 2. Study Room 3. M&E Room 4. Storage5. Dining Area6. Audio Room 7. Kitchen (Dry & Wet)8. Toilets9. Laundry Area10.Reading Room11.Lounge12.Bedrooms13.Balcony 14.Car Porch15.Stairs

Then, we are required to design the skeleton of the building by producing the structural plans of the bungalow. From there, structural analysis are carried out by us in which each of us have to analyze 6 beams with different types of load and 3 columns that support the roof to the foundation level.

Below shown is the building layout chosen by us from Category A and Category B:

DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

Height of the Floors: 3m

Brick wall Thickness: 0.15m

Reinforced Concrete Slab Thickness: 0.15m

Reinforced Concrete Beam Size:

- Primary : 0.20m x 0.30m- Secondary : 0.15m x 0.30m

Reinforced Concrete Column Size: 0.30m x 0.30m

Foundation Pad Footing: 1.2m x 1.2m

Reinforced Concrete Density: 24kN/m³

Brick Wall Density: 19kN/m³

Concrete Slab Self Weight: 3.6kN/m²

Slab system

Ly/Lx ≥ 2 (One Way Slab System)

Ly/Lx < 2 (Two Way Slab System)

Beam Calculation

Beam Self Weight

= beam size x density of reinforced concrete

Brick Wall Self Weight

= wall height x thickness x density of bricks

Slab Dead Load

- Triangular = thickness x density of reinforced concrete x Lx/2 x 2/3

- Trapezoid= thickness x density of reinforced concrete x Lx/ 2

Slab Live Load

- Triangular = Lx/2 x 2/3 x live load (UBBL)

- Trapezoid= Lx/2 x live load (UBBL)

Column Calculation

Column Self Weight

= width x length x height x density of reinforced concrete

Beam Self Weight

= beam size x density of reinforced concrete x length

Brick Wall Self Weight

= wall height x thickness x density of bricks x length

Slab Dead Load

= thickness x density of reinforced concrete x tributary area

Slab Live Load

= live load (UBBL) x tributary area

BUILDING STRUCTURES PROJECT 2 Structural Analysis of Bungalow

CONCLUSION

The designed columns of the bungalow are able to hold the load, using the formula in accordance to BS 8110;

N = 0.4fcuAc + 0.8 fyAsc

N = capacity of concrete

Fcu = concrete strength (N/mm2)

Ac = cross section of concrete column

fy = yield strength of steel (N/mm2)

Asc = steel content in a column

Column Size:

300mm x 300mm

BUILDING STRUCTURES PROJECT 2 Structural Analysis of Bungalow

N = 0.4 (fcu) (Ac) + 0.8 (fy) (Asc)

N = (0.4) (30) (90000) + (0.8) (460) (1800)

N = 1080000 + 662400

= 1742400 N

= 1742.4 kN

Thus, the columns of the Bungalow are able to sustain any ULTIMATE load below 1742.2kN.

From this project, we have learnt about the method of calculating and analysing the beams and columns of a building. Besides that, we are able to recognize and implement the basic procedures of building structure design that will aid us in our future work. As such, it is important to have a thorough understanding on building structure as it is part of a design process in architectural field.
