Nutrition
Education
Program for
Students &
Parents starting
FALL 2011 !
The Bienestar/NEEMA Health Program will
take place over nine weeks in elementary
schools in the Bronx this fall. The purpose
of this program is to provide nutrition edu-
cation for 3rd and 4th graders. The goal is
to help children and their families develop
healthy lifestyles to prevent obesity.
The Bronx, like much of
the Untied States, is facing
a childhood obesity epidemic. This means
more and more children are becoming over-
weight or obese. As these children become
older, their risk of getting diabetes and
other diseases increases. We must find a
way to keep students active and healthy!
The Bienestar/NEEMA Health Program is
designed to teach children how to prevent
obesity. Students learn the importance of
cutting down on eating fatty foods, eating
more foods with fiber, and increasing physi-
cal activity.
The Bienestar/NEEMA Health program is
used in other schools in Texas and has been
found to be successful! Now we are bringing
this education to our students starting with
3rd grade and 4th grade classes this Fall.
Health Program for 3rd & 4th Grade
Student curriculum consists of:
• Pre/Post Test
• Nutrition focus in every grade level
• Nutrition Road Maps—Goals—Pledges
• Benefits of Physical Activities
• Food Journals
Can my child
participate?
In Fall 2011 we will begin to recruit schools and
teachers to participate in this program. If your
child’s school agrees to participate, you will
receive a permission slip , which needs to be
signed and returned to the school to allow you
child to participate. For 2011, this program will
be available only to 3rd and 4th grade students
and their parents. In the future, we hope to ex-
pand the program to other grade levels.
