Faces � e homeless.The faces of homelessness are quite different than theywere just a few years ago. The new poor include those whowork full time for minimum wage and cannot afford anapartment. One child in every Jefferson County classroomis homeless. There are more people living in their cars thanever before and sadly,many of the area’shomeless are men andwomen who have foughtfor our country.

Today, the population ofour communitiy’shomeless is comparableto the size of a small,American town. They are real people of all ages withvarying degrees of education and life experiences, and forwhatever reason, each day is a struggle. They should notbe ignored.

Hope for e homeless.The Coalition for the Homeless has championed the plightof the homeless in this community for over two decades.We represent the best interests of the homeless whilepromoting prevention as well as intervention. We workwith area service providers and all levels of government inorder to help men, women and children who are in needof a safe place to sleep, a hot meal, warm clothes, and afresh start.

Our role.We work to educate the community about homelessnessand inspire action. Through speaking engagements,poverty simulations and educational materials, we reachout to individuals and corporations in an effort to createa greater awareness and understanding of the complexityof homelessness. We cultivate community participationin prevention activities and solutions and we welcomevolunteers.

We advocate on the local, state and federal levels forsystem changes that will create more opportunities forjobs, education and housing for the homeless. We alsocoordinate year-round programs that include federalfunding to help build more permanent housing, gatherbetter data about the changing faces of homelessness, andensure that shelters in Metro Louisville meet and maintain ahigh set of operating standards.
