DirectorHappy Holidays, Everyone! How time does fly! I can’t
believe that December is herealready! I am so very anxious tobe spending my first holidayseason with all of you!
I have enjoyed myconversations with many of youon how you typically celebrate theholidays. I am finding that I sharemany of the same mixed feelingsas some of you in that as we seeour children and grandchildrengrow, as well as great-grandchildren for some of you, they are ending some traditionsthat you once cared so muchabout. I often look back and feelthat I should have embracedmany of the family traditions thatmy own parents set before us, as Iknow how much they meant tomy own mother, especially.
Daughters-in-law are now uponmy own family, both of whom Icherish. They, and my sons, are
beginning their own traditions asthey go into the holidays withtheir little ones. The talk of atwhose home will Christmas Evebe spent, splitting time betweeneach set of grandparents, baking, which may or may not includeyour own passed down recipes, allcan get you down if you let it.Over the past 2-3 years, I havetaken on the philosophy that yes, family’s grow, new traditionsbegin, and Mary Jane, this issomething that you can’t control! To overcome my feelings when Iget down, I have learned to spendmore time talking about the “oldtime traditions,” how they cameabout, and open up to listenabout my new family member’sown family traditions. One thingwe all agree on, we are so verythankful that some traditions haveended that involved days and daysof working in the kitchen, whereno modern-day applianceswere used!
I look forward to spendingmore time with my BelmontVillage “family” and listening toyour holiday traditions!
Have a truly wonderfulholiday!
Mary Jane

We want to send a great bigthank you to all who participatedand donated to the annualAlzheimer’s memory walk. It trulywas a successful event as weintegrated with many others whohave been touched by this terribledisease. Hopefully a cure will befound soon.
Circle of FriendsCOF enjoyed a great excursion.
We visited The Skirball CulturalCenter. We viewed several exhibitsalong with their beautiful watergarden. But mostly, residentsenjoyed watching the childreninteract with gadgetry displayed inThe Noah’s Ark exhibit.
From the WellnessCenter
Ho Ho Ho. The holiday seasonhas already begun, and the storesare all decorated in preparationfor the onslaught of shopping thatcomes with it. While we may feelsome stress at this time, seniorcitizens can suffer from greaterfeelings of stress, and at times, depression. Often, they reflect ontheir past, recount their memories, and remember those they havelost. If they have family aroundthem during the holidays, theremay be social gatherings, performances to attend, andactivities to do. There are someways to alleviate the stress andenjoy all that the holidayscan offer.
To start off, maintain asemblance to the activity schedulethat you are already accustomedto. Plan naps or rest times so thatyou can enjoy the busy times. Seta budget and make others awareof it. If you have a certain dollaramount that you would like togive or spend on presents, events, and food, stick to it. In reality, people really just want to spendtime with others and makememories. You can’t put a priceon that. Lastly, do not isolate
yourself. Many churches andpublic groups have specialprograms and services that areavailable at this time and areaimed at this wonderful agegroup. Smile, relax, and enjoyyour holiday season.
