From the ExecutiveDirector
Dear Friends and Family,As I thought about the month
of November, and what themonth represents, I have to behonest. The first thought was“pie,” as Thanksgiving is the onlytime of the year that our kitchen isfilled with desserts that wetypically would never have in ourhouse. My favorite being pumpkinpie with loads of whip cream, atreat that I give myself on that onespecial day!
My next thought, and withmuch sincerity, I look at this timeto truly appreciate those peoplewho are in my life. After losing mymother in 2011, I thought I wouldnot be able to function as a wifeand mother. Even though I hadbeen “functioning” since 1979when I became a wife, and 1981 amother for the first time, I hadalways had my mother there tocall with any question I may have. After her passing, who would I callfor a different chicken recipe?Who would I speak to when Iwant to talk about the plot of a
Cary Grant movie? And if myhusband didn’t get the “job jar”opened on a particular weekend, who would respond with storiesof the same tribulations as shehad with my father?
I am happy to say that, although I do miss my mothervery much, my life is explodingwith affection, love, tenderness, warmth, devotion, and friendship. My family, of course, meanseverything to me, howeveradditionally, being able to drive toBurbank each day, and pull up achair at any dining room tableand have a conversation that Iwould have at my own parent’skitchen table, is unlike any other“job.” I cannot tell you how trulyblessed I am to be surrounded byso many wonderful residents andfamily members. In addition, thestories I hear as I speak to our staffabout their connections with all ofyou are very similar to mine. Justthis morning, I was speaking to aPAL in our NH that works thenight shift. She had tears in hereyes as she told me how aresident, who rarely speaks, spokeher name during an early morningvisit. As this PAL spoke, Iconnected to each and every word.If it wasn’t so early in themorning, I would have yelled“Yes! Is not the feeling of‘connecting’ with our residents thebest (continued on next page...)

To summarize the above, Iwant to take this opportunity toTHANK YOU for all that youbring to me and Belmont Village.Your stories, advice, and yourcaring hearts are so very muchappreciated. I told my childrenthat this year, I would like to takethe time for each of us to sharewhat we are thankful for prior tocutting into our turkey. All wereexcited at the idea until I pulledout the list of all 155 residentsand a roster of 115 employees. After the idea sunk in, our sonasked if we could save my speciallists until the dessert comes out.He is afraid our entire dinner willget cold!
Have a wonderful Novembereveryone and a very specialThanksgiving!

Neighborhood News...The neighborhood was full of fun, spooky and yummy treats in
October (including mouth-watering “spider” treats we couldn’t getenough of!). Halloween was a successful and enjoyable celebration withthe residents dressed in their own unique, handcrafted masks. Wecontinue regularly scheduled outings--much to the delight of theresidents! This month featured a trip to P.F. Chang’s, where we were allable to enjoy delicious Chinese cuisine. As always, incorporating funand therapeutic activities with our “theme of the day” is our mostimportant goal. This month featured themes like “Picasso Day,”“National Pizza Day” and “Know our Ecology”--where we studiedvarious aspects of our world’s ecosystems and the interaction of theorganisms that inhabit them!
Circle of Friends News...October was another
growth-filled month for the Circleof Friends. Each day, our residentswere engaged in activities centeredaround Belmont Village’saward-winning and highlyreputable six domains of mentalfitness: Critical Thinking,Long-Term Memory, LearningSomething New, Step-by-StepSequencing, Memory-BodyMovement and Analytic Solutions. With practice, we continueworking to strengthen and refineeach area. The month of Octoberbrought fun adventures to newplaces like Santa Anita Racetrackand the “Rise of the Jack o’Lanterns” carved pumpkin exhibitat the Convention Center indowntown Los Angeles. Wecelebrated Halloween with adress-up day where residents (andemployees!) sported their mostcreative disguises.

Tips for a ThinnerThanksgiving
From DRCSTammy Cooper
Gaining weight during theholiday season is a nationalpastime. Did you know that mostpeople gain at least a poundduring the holiday? Some evengain more. Worst is most peoplekeep that weight on permanently.
The good news is with a littleknowledge you can indulgeyourself in traditional holiday fareand still enjoy a guilt-freeThanksgiving feast. After all, beingstuffed is a good idea only if youare a turkey.
Get Active: Eat less and exercisemore during the holidays toprevent weight gain. Boost thefrequency of your fitness routinethe weeks ahead of the feast. Takea walk early Thanksgiving day andthen again after dinner if you areup to it. It is a wonderful way forfamilies to get physical and enjoythe holiday at the same time.
Eat Breakfast: Eating a smallmeal in the morning may give youmore control over your hunger.Start your day with a healthybreakfast, preferably one with
protein and fiber, which may helptake the edge off your cravingsand allow you to be more sensiblelater in the day during the“big feast.”
Watch your Portions: Beforefilling up your plate, evaluate thebuffet table and decide whatyou’re going to choose. Don’tsquander your calories on foodsthat you can have all year long.Indulge with small portions ofholiday favorites so you can enjoyyour traditional favorites
Best Bets on the Table: Whiteturkey meat, plain vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashedpotatoes and defatted gravy tend tobe the best bets because they arelower in fat and calories.
Skip the Seconds andLeftovers: Try to resist thetemptation to go back for secondhelpings or leftovers. You are lesslikely to overeat and have moreroom for a delectable dessert. Butonly one slice of that pumpkinpie!!!
Thank you to the friends and familyof Bernice Christenson for organizing
