Why is it difficult to walk in grassy areas with high heels?

ANSWER

The force due to gravity and the mass of the person is concentrated on a small area (the circular or square base of the heel). This creates a high pressure, when the earth can not push back enough to match this pressure, the heels are pushed into the grass.

This is not limited to sumo wrestlers in heels. A 54kg (120lb) person can exert almost 2000 lbs/ in^2 from a heel by balancing on one foot.

The same concept applies to cleats (football, softball, soccer, track, and baseball) where athletes want more traction.

Why is support area critical to remaining upright?

In order to make infrastructure more stable, a larger support area is needed, which makes it more difficult for a push to the center of mass beyond it’s support area. For example the Eiffel tower was designed with a large base, narrowing towards the top of the structure. Without the wide base the tower could blow over in strong wind. The same is true about radio towers, which have strong support cables, called guy wires.

This concept applies to football players and wrestlers who get low making their body more stable.
