Questions:

1. Look back at your table of data. Do you see any pattern(s) emerging? If so, what pattern(s) do you see?

2. Where does your best-fit line cross one of your axes? What does this mean?

3. Where would you expect the line to cross the axes? Why?

4. Describe how you could use a graph to predict a person’s wingspan.

5. An average 3 year-old is about 91 cm tall. Use your best-fit line to predict his wingspan.

Why is it difficult to walk in grassy areas with high heels?

Why would thisconcept be important?

Page 20: BELL RINGERS. How are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches related to conservation of mass? BELL RINGER 10/15.

ANSWER

The force due to gravity and the mass of the person is concentrated on a small area (the circular or square base of the heel). This creates a high pressure, when the earth can not push back enough to match this pressure, the heels are pushed into the grass.

This is not limited to sumo wrestlers in heels. A 54kg (120lb) person can exert almost 2000 lbs/ in^2 from a heel by balancing on one foot.

The same concept applies to cleats (football, softball, soccer, track, and baseball) where athletes want more traction.

In order to make infrastructure more stable, a larger support area is needed, which makes it more difficult for a push to the center of mass beyond it’s support area. For example the Eiffel tower was designed with a large base, narrowing towards the top of the structure. Without the wide base the tower could blow over in strong wind. The same is true about radio towers, which have strong support cables, called guy wires.

This concept applies to football players and wrestlers who get low making their body more stable.

measure of how much stuff could fit into an amount of space of a 3 dimensional object

What is the difference between mass and weight?

is it the same on the moon?

Page 40: BELL RINGERS. How are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches related to conservation of mass? BELL RINGER 10/15.

M A S S

Measurement of an objects inertia= dependent on the amount of matter (atoms) an object possesses.

W E I G H T

• Weight is dependent on mass and gravity

• Weight is a measure of force due to gravity (N)

Page 41: BELL RINGERS. How are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches related to conservation of mass? BELL RINGER 10/15.

M A S S

• Is always constant as the object doesn’t change (add or remove mass)

• A 50kg person on earth would still have a mass of 50kg on the moon

W E I G H T

• Dependent on gravity

• Gravity on the moon is about 1/6th of that on earth

• A 110lb person would weigh about 1/6th or 18lbs
