AMoveTowardHealthierSnacks

TheMeadSchoolDistrictrevisedBoardPolicy6700inJune2016.Fortheoverallhealthandwell-beingofourstudents,thepolicyoutlinesapushforhealthiersnacksandtreatsintheclassroom.Holidaysandbirthdaysarespecialandapartofthehappeningsofschool,buttheBoardPolicyasksschoolstolookatthesetraditionsabitdifferently.“Schoolsshouldlimitcelebrationsthatinvolvefoodduringtheschooldaytonomorethanonepartyperclasspermonth.EachcelebrationshouldincludenomorethanonefoodorbeveragethatdoesnotmeettheSmartSnacksstandards.”AtEvergreencomefall,wewillnolongercelebratebirthdayswithfood.Wewillnotallowcupcakes,cookies,orsugarytreatsforbirthdays.Birthdayswillbecelebrated,ofcourse,butwithnon-fooditems.PerDistrictpolicy,celebrationsatHalloween,holidayparties,orValentine’sDayforexample,willbetimestocelebratewithamorebalancedfare—asugarytreataswellasamorehealthyoption.

MeetOurNewPrincipalAssistant

IampleasedtoannounceJoshVanCleefhasmovedintothePrincipalAssistantroleatourschool.AfterearninghisteachingcertificationfromEWU,Joshtaught2ndand3rdgradeinDeerParkforsixyears.In2015,Mr.VanCleefcompletedtheMastersinEducationalLeadershipprogramatWhitworth.Thatsameyear,hejoinedourstaffasaLAPteacher.JoshgrewupinnorthSpokaneattendingMeadschools.Hecontinuestoresideintheareawithhiswifeandtoddlertwins.Inadditiontospendingtimewithhisfamily,Joshenjoyscoachinghighschoolfootball,playinggolfandworkingonhomeimprovementprojects.We’resoexcitedtohaveMr.VanCleefatEvergreeninthisnewcapacity!

OnThursdayeveningAugust31,2017at5:30,wewouldliketoinviteallEvergreenkiddosandtheirfamiliestoschoolforanicecreamsocial.Icecreamwillbeservedtoallkidsandtheirfamilies.Inaddition,classassignmentswillbeavailable.Theschoolandclassroomswillbeopenforself-guidedtours.Comemeetyournewteacher!Tomakethefirstdayofschoolalittlelesshectic,studentswishingtodropoffschoolsuppliesmaydosothatevening.
