A Note From your Principal Dear Families, I just love summertime! The weather is incredible and folks are outdoors—walking, riding bikes, running, or playing in the park. Of course, here in Spokane we typically spend time at “the lake.” Summer is amazing! I hope, as I have, that you all have made memories this season. I hope too that your kiddos have been outside playing, maybe visiting the county library, fiddling in the dirt, or reading some. Video games and phones are fun, in moderation. I am excited to announce to the community that former Evergreen LAP teacher, Josh Van Cleef, will be assuming the role of Principal Assistant come fall. Mr. Van Cleef’s energy and enthusiasm for school and learning is simply infectious. It will be terrific to have him in an administrative role. As we near the beginning of school, keep a few things in mind. The office opens back up to support families as needed August 22. If you have previously attended Evergreen, there is no need to re-register. Class assignments have generally been crafted, but with transfers in and transfers out, class assignments remain fluid until August 30. That afternoon, we’ll mail assignments home. If you can’t wait for snail mail, drop by our ice cream social on Thursday, August 31 at 5:30. In addition to getting a tasty, cold ice cream treat, you can learn of class assignments, meet teachers, and drop off school supplies. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Best, Mr. Danford August 2017 Mustang Messenger Evergreen Elementary Mike Danford, Principal Josh Van Cleef, Principal Assistant Summer Reading at Evergreen Evergreen’s school library will continue to be open on Fridays through August 25 from 8-noon. We’ll host the first 30 children through the doors each Friday. A snack is served about halfway through each session. We encourage our students to take advantage of this neat opportunity. We’ve hosted local authors, nationally-touring poets, and guest readers. The fun will continue all August. TheMeadSchoolDistrictrevisedBoardPolicy6700inJune2016.Fortheoverallhealthandwell-beingofourstudents,thepolicyoutlinesapushforhealthiersnacksandtreatsintheclassroom.Holidaysandbirthdaysarespecialandapartofthehappeningsofschool,buttheBoardPolicyasksschoolstolookatthesetraditionsabitdifferently.“Schoolsshouldlimitcelebrationsthatinvolvefoodduringtheschooldaytonomorethanonepartyperclasspermonth.EachcelebrationshouldincludenomorethanonefoodorbeveragethatdoesnotmeettheSmartSnacksstandards.”AtEvergreencomefall,wewillnolongercelebratebirthdayswithfood.Wewillnotallowcupcakes,cookies,orsugarytreatsforbirthdays.Birthdayswillbecelebrated,ofcourse,butwithnon-fooditems.PerDistrictpolicy,celebrationsatHalloween,holidayparties,orValentine’sDayforexample,willbetimestocelebratewithamorebalancedfare—asugarytreataswellasamorehealthyoption.

IampleasedtoannounceJoshVanCleefhasmovedintothePrincipalAssistantroleatourschool.AfterearninghisteachingcertificationfromEWU,Joshtaught2ndand3rdgradeinDeerParkforsixyears.In2015,Mr.VanCleefcompletedtheMastersinEducationalLeadershipprogramatWhitworth.Thatsameyear,hejoinedourstaffasaLAPteacher.JoshgrewupinnorthSpokaneattendingMeadschools.Hecontinuestoresideintheareawithhiswifeandtoddlertwins.Inadditiontospendingtimewithhisfamily,Joshenjoyscoachinghighschoolfootball,playinggolfandworkingonhomeimprovementprojects.We’resoexcitedtohaveMr.VanCleefatEvergreeninthisnewcapacity!
