Augmented Reality is Basically Terminator Vision

Real scene +

computer generated data (or) graphics

=Augmented Reality

On the other hand Virtual reality provides full immersion. It does not “augment” reality.

Types of augmented reality

1.Marker-based Augmented reality

2.Markerless Augmented Reality.

3.Position based Augmented Reality

Things needed to create Augmented reality:

1. Smartphone 2. Augmented Reality app

Marker based Augmented Reality

• Requires a special Marker• Used in Advertising

1.Input 2. Marker Detection

Steps involved in marker based augmented reality

Using algorithms like Four corner test,Size test

Through Video

3. Marker Identification and Rendering

Steps involved in marker based augmented reality

• The detected marker is identified by matching it with other markers in a database.• Using Transformation Matrix 3D objects are aligned perfectly on the marker

Marker less Augmented Reality

Steps involved in marker less augmented reality

1.Feature point detection 2.Plane extraction

SLAM – Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

Harris Corner Detector

3.Tracking and Rendering• the distance and orientation of the

extracted plane with respect to the camera is calculated using various algorithms.(Eg: SIFT). This is called Tracking.

• The 3D object is rendered on the plane using rendering software.

Marker less AR can be used for Interactive learning

Position based augmented reality

Provides real time information

Steps Involved:

• Position of the user is found using GPS• Information about position is gathered from the internet• Gathered information is rendered on the screen using suitable rendering software

Most popular augmented reality apps

Nokia City Lens
