The Science and Engineering Festival will bring innovative hands-on activities in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to 4-12 grade students in the Traverse City area. The event will include local businesses and their STEM professionals, engaging the whole community. Inspired students will also be able to engage college and university representatives in how they can achieve thier new found career and academic aspirations.

Cranbrook Science Institute Cub Scout Event (2,000)

F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Regional Competition – Minneapolis (2,000)

When and Where:Tuesday May 3 in

collaboration with Northwest Michigan College – Traverse City

What is the programs goal?Excite students and the

community about innovative STEM learning by experiencing it

Allow student to speak with STEM professionals

Allow students to explore their post-high school options

Illustrate the importance of STEM education to the community

What are the components of the event1. Numerous engaging

hands-on STEM based activitiesConducted by

Undergrad/grad students and faculty from both Michigan Tech and Northwestern Michigan College

Each activity takes between 30 seconds and 3 minutes to complete

Goal is for students to learn the science behind the mystery

2. Local businesses/manufactures/corporations set up tables to describe their operations/what they produceProfessionals in STEM

related fields at tables describing what they do

May have activities or products they produce that students can touch and discuss how they are made or services they produce

3. Colleges, Universities, and other post-secondary programs would man tables at eventPurpose

Answer questions about preparing for college, major available, what classes would they take, etc.

What do we need? Local Businesses to

participate as described

Organizations to provide additional STEM related activities or volunteer to help with existing MIND TREKKERS activities

Donations to support the event:Provide each

participant a backpack to collect information and to keep to remind them about the excitement of discovering the science behind the mystery! Will also have sponsor logos

Cover event costs such as table rental

Costs of materials for hands-on activities
