Thirty-nine years ago, this land was a rocky, wooded hillside, typical of the 1850’s Warren County landscape. Twenty-plus log and period cabins now enhance the historic authenticity, of Luxenhaus Farm. This history was achieved through the vision of Bob Hostkoetter, with the help of family-friends-neighbors. In 1970, the former St. Louis professional photographer, watched derelict buildings destroyed in the sake of ‘progress!’ Of country roots, Bob resolved to preserve their rich heritage. First was the “Huber Haus” (built by Andrew Huber, in Perryville, MO, 1830); then the Covered Bridge and many more old Missouri cabins became “Luxenhaus Farm,” Platt Deutsch for “Log House Farm.” A Trust donates the farm and equipment for the two-day event, sharing Missouri’s history to guests from around the world. “Relive Our History” as you cross the “Eric Sloane Covered Bridge”– watch, learn and participate in our ancestor’s way of life! Here you are most welcome!

About Luxenhaus Farm.....
The Osage Trail......A new historic venue, “The Osage Trail”, completed in 2011, is dedicated to the Osage Tribe who settled this area around 1700. The volunteers constructed traditional Lodges-Long House-‘Wiki-Up’ and Teepees. Along the trail many French Trappers (1770) demonstrating bow making-hawk throwing-leather-flutes-music and so much more! The Osage Elders praised our exhibits, stating it is the finest replica of ‘their’ early life seen anywhere. Replicated from a 1700’s “Earth Home” is a “MISSOURI MUD Quebec” bake oven, high temp over 875˚-- it is quite an incredible volunteer achievement. Please don’t miss it—you may never see one again, except in Vermont. Our oven was completed in October, 2011.

The History of Deutsch Country Days . . In just 36 years, DCD has progressed from a benefit house tour on a cold, January Saturday to the most unique and authentic recreation of early Missouri German Pioneer life! The beautiful fall foliage and the cool weather influenced the date-change to the THIRD WEEKEND IN OCTOBER. Now the hills literally “come alive” with the sights and sounds of the 1800’s. The early immigrant’s functional lifestyle is authentically recreated by juried artisans in period attire demonstrating Tin smithing-Baskets-Wood carver-Spinning--Just a mere samples of the seventy+ life skills demonstrating our ancestors’ life-trades-pleasures and fun. Period musicians-whistling steam-smoke and the slightest aroma of open-hearth meals fill the crisp, autumn air. While watching elite artisans and volunteers, you can savor home cooking and even try your hand at crosscut sawing or dipping candles! A steam-powered sawmill and line-shaft woodshop complete the historic trip into Missouri’s yesteryear! Come enjoy yourself—enjoy our pioneer way of traditional lifestyles “come alive.”
“Today’s Preservation is Tomorrow’s History”©
Our Mission . . . . . .Deutsch Country Days is conducted exclusively by dedicated volunteers whose purpose and mission is to exhibit, celebrate and preserve the traditions, language, skills, folklore, joys and triumphs of the early German Missouri settlers.
