(Riverside,CA)--BeginningSeptember16th,UCRARTSblockwillpresentMundosAlternos:ArtandScienceFictionintheAmericas,theculminationofaworldwideexplorationincluding18monthsoftravelthroughout6countries.ExhibitioncuratorsRobbHernández,TylerStallings,andJoannaSzupinska-Myersvisitedmorethan400artists,curators,andscholarsandselectedover30contemporaryartists,whoworkwithinthesciencefictiongenretoimaginenewrealitiesandalternateworlds.MundosAlternosisareflectionofthecurators’relentlesseffortstoidentifyestablishedandemergentvoicesinthefield—manyshowinginSouthernCaliforniaforthefirsttime.“MundosAlternosisthefirstprojectthatconsiderstheconvergenceofvisualart,sciencefiction,andLatinAmericanstudies—aconvergencethathasthepotentialtogeneratefurtherinquiriesinallofthesefields,”saysJoannaSzupinska-Myers,SeniorCuratorofExhibitionsattheCaliforniaMuseumofPhotographyandco-curatoroftheexhibition.Visitorsshouldexpecttheunexpectedbywayoflarge-scaleinstallations,photographs,sculpture,drawings,paintings,performances,andvideoinstallationsthatencompass11,000squarefeetinARTSblock’stwoadjacentbuildings:theCaliforniaMuseumofPhotography(CMP)andtheBarbaraandArtCulverCenteroftheArts.ThecuratorialteamhasalsoproducedamajorcontributiontothefieldofsciencefictionstudiesintheformofaheavilyillustratedbookthatincludesoriginalessaysbythecuratorsandleadingscholarswithexpertiseinLatinAmerican,Latino/a,andChicano/avisualculture,withanemphasisontheUnitedStates,Mexico,Argentina,Brazil,andCentralAmerica.“WehaveselectedaswathofartistsacrosstheAmericaswhohavecreatedartworksthatpointtoalternateworlds,inwhichself-determinationandautonomycanoccurinapresentthatisalreadythepastpointingtoafuture,”explainsTylerStallings,ArtisticDirectoroftheCulverCenteroftheArtsandco-curatoroftheexhibition.MundosAlternosbringstogethertheworkofinternationalartistsfromacrossLatinAmericaandLatinoartistsfromthroughouttheUnitedStates.Artistsearlyintheircareers—includingBeatrizCortez(b.1970,SanSalvador,ElSalvador),JillianMayer(b.1984,Miami,FL),HectorHernandez(b.1974,Laredo,TX),andClarissaTossin(b.1973,PortoAlegre,Brazil)—provideanewwayofthinkingaboutcontemporaryartintheAmericas.Whilemoreestablishedartists—GuillermoGómez-Peña(b.1955,MexicoCity,Mexico),GyulaKosice(b.1924,Košice,Czechoslovakia,d.2016,BuenosAires,Argentina),andRubénOrtizTorres(b.1964,MexicoCity,Mexico)—illustrateanintersectionbetweengenerationsinafieldthathasneverbeenexploredwithsuchscholarlyaptitude

andvigor.MundosAlternosisthestartofanideathataffectsthewaywethinkofcontemporaryartandwillchangethewayhistoryiswritten. “ThisexhibitionisthefirsteffortoftransnationalscopetoidentifythegrowingtendencyofsciencefictionincontemporaryLatinAmericanandLatinoart,atendencythatrecasts‘thefuture’atatimewhendebatesoverimmigrationreform,militarizedborders,massdeportations,andeffortstobuild‘thewall’mightsuggestotherwise,”explainsRobbHernández,AssistantProfessorofEnglishatUCRandco-curatoroftheexhibition.“BuildingonUCR’sinternationalreputationinthestudyofsciencefiction,thisambitiousexhibitioncontributesnewscholarshiptothefieldofcontemporaryLatinAmericanandLatino/aartisticexpression,”saysSheilaBergman,ARTSblockExecutiveDirector.
