Antonio Ulloa• Not forceful leader• Quiet manner, not effective• Colonists upset they could
only trade with Spanish forts now• Colonists did not recognize his positive actions
Positive Contributions:
• Improved colonists safety by touring & inspecting forts
• Communicated & made positive connection with nearby British governor
• Sought goodwill of Indians• Gave them more gifts than French had ever
given them• Learned to speak French
The Rebellion…• Colonists still considered the colony French
because they didn’t accept authority of Ulloa• October 1768, armed mob gathered in N.O.• Ulloa could do little to stop rebellion since he
did not have many Spanish soldiers• He fled with his family…

after parading in with cannons firing and red & gold flags
Governor O’Reilly• Gave speeches emphasizing Spain’s control• Held a trial where leaders of rebellion were
sentenced to death & some imprisoned• He required all colonists to take an oath to
pledge allegiance to Spain• Colonists nicknamed him “Bloody O’Reilly”
