Alcohol ….is a drug
which causes real harmfor our whanau, families and
communities
Nationally, alcohol harm Cancers
Breast cancer particularly – 3 drinks per day increases risk of breast cancer by 50%
Between 600 – 3000 babies born each year with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders
Male drinkers 18 – 24 years old: 43% had hazardous drinking patterns
Nationally, alcohol linked With ROAD INJURIES: 28% of all road traffic injuries
With DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, CHILD ABUSE & NEGLECT
With up to 46% of all CRIMINAL OFFENCES
With over 10,000 SEXUAL ASSAULTS annually
Over 62,000 PHYSICAL ASSAULTS annually
Northland harm… 21% drinking ‘harmful to health’ (NZ = 17%)
Amongst highest domestic violence rates
Alcohol in 41% fatal / serious crashes; 28% injuries
Excessive alcohol consumption a great risk…
Whangarei harm…Emergency Department: 15 months of just the injuries
At least 12.7% (601) of all injuries involved alcohol
34% of admissions of males 20 – 24 years involved alcohol
30% of admissions of females aged 20 – 24 involved alcohol
Whangarei harm…Whg Emergency Dept 2013 – 2014: Alcohol involved in
19% - 22% of admissions for injuries to multiple parts of body, to head and brain, and for poisoning
340 admissions for injuries to head and brain
56% of admissions from interpersonal violence
41% of admissions for self-inflicted injuries
