The role Of Information Technology• To respond effectively to the dynamic character of the

tourism industry, information must be able to flow among the client, intermediaries and each of the suppliers involved in servicing the clients needs.

• As a result, information technology (IT) – the convergence of computing, communications and electronics – has become an almost universal distribution platform of the tourism industry. The power of I.T. allows information to be managed more effectively, and transported worldwide almost instantly.

IT; Electronic distribution: The evolution of airline CRSs to GDSs

Electronic distribution systems in tourism have their origins in the inventory systems that were installed by airlines at the end of the 1950s and during the 1960s. Originally organizational systems in the mid-1970s by installing terminals in travel agents instant access to real-time availability and pricing information. As well as the ability to make instant bookings, thus helping them to greatly improve the quality of service to their customers. The airlines also benefited fro this arrangement.

Deregulation of the airline sector in the USA in the late 1970s gave great impetus to the growth in the adoption of computerized reservation systems (CRSs). In essence, deregulation triggered both the introduction of new airlines and also allowed more airlines to compote on the same routes.

As a result, the use of a CRS became practically essential to try to cost – effectively untangle the complex web of information. CRSs introduced three major financial benefits through directional selling to the parent carrier.

Information Technology in Tour Operator and Travel Agencies

• In contrast with business and independent leisure traveller a considerable number of consumers normally purchase ‘tourist packages’ arranged by tour operators and often use charter flights and small accommodation establishments for their annual holidays. Tour operators tend to distribute their products by displaying brochures of their packages in travel agencies.
