Example of how Cultural Prescribing Helps so many different people – straw pole of attendees on a TOYL trip in 2015

The Time of Your Life Project

Why Cultural prescribing is good - Attendees benefit – wellbeing agenda. Local economy benefits – 30 + places booked on a sea cruise = £££’s for local economy + all those fish and chips and cups of tea!

Important – only good if not prescriptive – one size fits all does not work!

The Greek poet Pindar wrote in the 5th Century BC: “The Best of healers is Good Cheer’’

Anthropologists have

unearthed evidence of

Laughter as a medicine in the

most divers and ancient of

cultures…

In ancient Greece, you often found the Temples of Entertainment next to the Healing Temples.

Example - Taking an Individual fishing kept him out of hospital – was spending 5 months a year on a psychiatric unit – cost implication was huge!

Charity sector perception – of Health = Complex health ‘pathways’ and inefficient. Charity sector vision of self = neat and tidy professional charity offers

Health perception of self = Lots of smiling efficient medical staff Perception of charity and voluntary sector = ‘Enthusiastic Armature's’
