Here’s what happens whenyou read fiction: There is achemical change in the brain-like a chemical change in anexercised muscle. There is aquiet shift of ideas. There isa relationship to a characterwe like - or don’t like. Thereis a vision of a place. Thereis a satisfaction of seeingethical behavior - or dissatis-faction at an unethical behav-ior. There is a dread ofrevenge. There is disgust ofrevenge carried out. There issatisfaction of well-earnedclosure - a “good” ending. Ifthere isn’t a “good” ending,an internal arguement takesplace. The brain is happy.
