Thejourneybetweenbothcentresisreallyshort,itcanbedonebyfoot(13minuteswalk)ortakingtheunderground(twostops).
There is a metro stop nearby each of both centres. The Trafalgar building is next to
UrquinaonaundergroundstopLine1 (red)andLine4 (yellow); theBailénbuilding isnexttoGironaundergroundstopLine4(yellow).
TakingtheyellowlineL4,therearetwostopsbetweenoffices.
INBARCELONA
BarcelonaisthecapitalofCatalonia.Surroundedbyalargemetropolitanarea,thereare1,620,000inhabitants.Thecity’stwothousandyearsofhistoryhavelefttheirfootprint inthearchitectural,
artisticandculturalheritage.
Itsexcellentsituationandinternationalcommunicationssystem,itsclimateanditscosmopolitannaturemakeitaprivilegedcityindeed.
Tofindone’swayinBarcelonaitisnotdifficultbutitisnecessarytokeepinmindsomeimportantreferences.The innercity is located inPlaçadeCatalunya, tothesouthofwhichthere is theold
townandmostofthemuseumsandotherhistoricalplacesofinterestofthecity.
The famous Rambla meanders from Plaça Catalunya (Catalunya Square) down to Columbusstatue,next to theharbour.To theeastof theRambla, youcan find thebeautiful and romanticBarriGòtic(GoticQuartier),andtothewesttheBarriRaval(RavalQuartier).FromtheColumbus
statueyoucanfollowthePasseigMarítim(Seafront)totheeast,theMolldelaFustaandPortVell,the colourful Barceloneta area and up to the Port Olímpic (Olympic Port). To the west, theAvingudaParal·lel(Paral·lelAvenue)takesyoutoPlaçad’Espanya(EspanyaSquare),fromwhere
Montjuïc,oneofthemountainsofBarcelona,risesup.
The othermountain, Tibidabo,marks the northern limit of the city. The also popular AvingudaDiagonal (Diagonal Avenue) is another important landmark since it runs diagonally across thewholecity.
BetweenPlaçaCatalunyaandAvingudaDiagonalwecanfindalmostthewholeEixamplequartier,
whicharosefromthefamousPlaCerdà(“Cerdà’scityplan),aimedatjoiningtheoldtownwiththevillagessituatednearby,whicharenowpartofBarcelona.Thesevillages,suchasGràcia,LesCortsand Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, have kept their own historical and cultural identity. L’Eixample, the
squared area that, like in New York, the streets have only one sense, has amain artery calledPasseigdeGràcia,whereyoucanfindthefamousGaudí’sPedreraandCasaBatlló.

Barcelona, as a seaside city, has awarm, humid and sunnyweather that invites to enjoy doingoutdooractivitiesandevenhavingabathinthebeachesfromthespringuntilthebeginningoftheautumnseason.Temperaturesarerarelyextremebutinwintertheycanreachminus1or2Celsius
degrees.
Generally,foreignvisitorsdonotknowthatBarcelonaisabilingualcitywhereSpanishandCatalanare spoken.Catalan is the traditional languageofCatalonia and, asSpanish, French, Italian andotherMediterranean languages, comes from Latin, whichmakes it easier to understand it. It is
commonthatthepeoplefromBarcelona,atfirst,speakwithvisitorsinCatalanalthoughtheywillspeakinSpanishwhentheyrealisethatthevisitordoesn’tspeakthelanguage.

Inspiteofbeingasafecity,itisimportanttobealwaysawareofpersonalbelongings,asanyotherbigtouristiccity.Itisnecessarytobeawareofpickpockets,especiallyinthecitycentreand the underground. It is also advisable to keep in mind some basic precautions like notkeeping money or expensive gadgets in any external pocket or keeping an eye on yourbelongings.

ACCOMMODATION
AccommodationoffersofBarcelonaareverydiverseinBarcelona.Accommodationcanusuallybefoundatanytimeduringtheyearbutitiseasiertofindmoreoffersthemonthsbeforethestartingof courses in the universities. That is why we recommend you to start searching for
accommodation in JulyandAugust for thestudentsbeginning in the firstsemester (September-October) and in November or December for those who begin in January and February. In thefollowing information related to accommodation, youwill find apartments and residencies. The
closestneighbourhoodstotheschoolare:BarriGòtic,EixampleandBorn.
Important:The listof accommodationplacesappearsonlyasa reference.Wecannotguaranteethequalityoftheservice,particularlyinthecaseofroomrenting.

LENGTHOFTHELEASE
Thelengthoftheleaseisfreeandhastobeagreedbybothparties.However,ifthetimeagreedislessthan5years,thelawestablishesthatthecontractmayremaininforcethroughoutthisperiod(it isautomaticallyextendedto5years).Thatiswhythetenant,beforeleavingtheapartment, is
obligedtonotifythelandlordgivingamonth’snotice.

RENTTheamountofrentwillbeagreedandnegotiatedbybothparties.Themonthlypaymentwillbedoneduringthefirst7daysofeverymonth(unlessotherwisespecified).Thelandlordmustprovidethetenantwithareceipt.Thebestwaytopaytherentisthroughthebank,statingthereasonforthepayment.
DEPOSITWhilesigningthelease,youwillbeaskedtogiveadepositincash,correspondingtoonemonth’s
rent.This iscompulsoryaccordingtotheUrbanLeasesLaw,and it issubjecttoupdateafterthefirstfiveyearsoflease.Thedepositactsassecurityincasethetenantfailstofulfilhisobligationsandtorespondtoanydamagecausedbythetenantattheproperty.Thisdepositwillbereturned
whenyouleavethepropertyifthereisnodamage.
Alwaysaskforareceiptstatingthatthepaymentofthisamountactsasadeposit.
Theownermustdepositnecessarilythewholeamountofthedepositintoanofficialorganismsohecannotobtainanyinterest.
Besidesthedeposit,thelandlordcannegotiatewiththetenantotherguarantees,suchasbankguarantees,personalguarantees,insuranceandsoon.
ATTENTION:SUBLEASEANDPARTIALLEASESublease and partial lease are the big unknown for many people who want to becomeemancipatedbutcannotaffordtheentirerentofahouse.Rentingpartofahouselookslikeavery
economicaloption.
Sublease: According to the Urban Leases Law, the tenant has the option to sublet part of thepropertyhehaspreviously fully rented,alwayswith thepriorwrittenconsentof theowner.Therentedhousecanonlybepartiallysublet.
Partial lease: This kind of lease is suitable for young people who want to rent a room in a flat
ownedbyanotherperson,livingwiththeowneroftheflat.
Youmustbeverycarefulwiththesetypesofcontractsbecausemisunderstandingcausesallsortsof situations in which victims are usually the weakest (often young people), if they are notpreviouslywellinformed.
Thesekindofagreementsareoftendoneverballybetweenthe landlordandthetenantdefining
therebytheconditions.Becarefulwiththembecausethefactofnohavinganywrittendocumentcangreatlyaffectyoursituationandcreateasenseofhelplessnessinyourrightsandinterests.
When formalizing this kind of contracts,wemust knowwhich parts of the housewe can freelyenjoy,whicharethespacestobesharedwiththetenantorotherpeoplewhoalsohaveapartial

lease in the same home, and to establishwhich are the expenses to be assumed, among other
things.

IfoundanapartmentandIwanttoshareitwithafriend.Underwhichnameshouldtheleasebe?
Itishighlyrecommendedtoputbothnamesonit.Thisway,ifoneofyouwantstoleavethehouse,theotheroneisallowedtostay.
CanIassignorsublettheapartmenttosomeoneelse?
Never without the consent of the landlord. If subletting is agreed, it shall be done through a
subleasecontract.
WhatshouldIdoifIjustwanttorentaroom?
Obviously,dosoinwritingwithapartialleaseorsublease.Yourrightsshouldneverbelowerthanthoseof the landlord.The roomrentand lengthof contract cannotexceed the initial leaseandcommonspacesyoucanenjoyhavetobedefined.
If,forexample,thegasboilerisdamaged,whoshouldpayforit?
If the damage is due towear and tear, the expense should be paid by the owner, but if it was
caused bymisuse of the tenant, the tenant should pay. In any case, you should notmake anychangewithoutnotifyingtheowner.

INFORMATION ABOUT NEIGHBOURHOODS INBARCELONA DistrictsinBarcelona:
1:CiutatVella:itreferstothecitiy’soldpart.ItisdividedbyLasRamblasandAvenidaLaietanaandsplitintothreedifferentsparts:Raval,BarriGòticandBorn.* Raval: Formerly known as the poor district of the city. In 1988, the government launched a urban
rehabilitationprojectwith thegoalofmaking thispartof thecitymoremodernandsafe. In spiteof that,there still exist someplaces that arenot completely safe: for example, it is oneprincipal partsof the city
wheretherearepickpocketsandotherthefts,especiallyduringthenight.Raval is an active andmulticultural quartier that offers awide variety of tempting cafes, restaurants and
bars. Here we can find the MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona) and the CCCB

(ContemporaryCultureCentreofBarcelona),apartfromtwoofthemostfamousfoodmarketsofBarcelona,
LaBoqueriaandtheMercatdeSantAntoni.Thenearestundergroundstation is inLasRamblas, themost famousstreet inBarcelona thatgoesacross
oneofRaval’ssides.Rentalpricesmayvarydependingonthequalityofthebuildingalthough,beingoneofthebestsitesserved
bypublictransportinthewholecity,theytendtobeabitexpensive.
*BarrioGótico: It is theoldest district ofBarcelona.However, due to constant remodelations, you caneasilyfindoldbuildingsnexttomodernones.Theirstreetsarenarrowandsinuousandtherewecanfindalotofsquarestorelaxandenjoytheenvironment.Inadditiontothat,inthisquartierwecanfindoneofthemostsignificativemonumentsofCiutatVella,theCathedralofBarcelona.Rentalpricesareusuallynotexpensivebutthebuildingsareold. Ithasalsoagoodnetofpublic transportwith severalundergroundandbus stops.But,being located in the inner city, it ispossibleandeasy togowalkingtoseveralpointsofinterest.*ElBorn:inspiteofitsmodestoriginsasasettlementbuiltonamedievalplaceinordertoorganisejousts
andcelebrations,thisquartierhasgrownuntilbeingoneofthemostmodernplacesofthecity.Itissimilarto
theGoticQuartierbut, in this case,elBorn it isoneof themostexpensivequartiers to rent inBarcelona.Mostoftheapartmentshavebeenrecentlyremodelledalthoughthefrontsofthebuildingshavebeenkept
astheoriginals.Amongthemostinterestingplacesthatwecanfindinthisquartier,thereisthecathedralofSantaMariadelMarandthePicassoMuseum.
*Barceloneta:FishermenwerethefirstonestosettledownintheXVIIIcenturyattheseashore,nowadaysknownasBarceloneta.It is very different compared with the other three quartiers. The streets are narrow and even darksometimes. It still keeps some kind of a village soul. The beach is, for sure, themost attractive point ofBarcelonetaand,duringthesummer,itisalwaysovercrowdedwithtouristsandthearea’sneighbourhood.IntheBarceloneta’srestaurantsitispossibletotastethebestpaellasintown.Wemustsayithasnotagoodnetofpublictransportbecauseitonlyhasoneundergroundstation(inthenortharea).2:Eixample:TheEixample(“cityexpansionarea”)isthenewestpartofBarcelona.ItisabigarealocatedtothenorthofPlaçaCatalunya,totherightofPasseigdeGràcia.ItisanextensionofthecitydesignedbytheCatalanengineerCerdà,inthe1850s.Thewholeareamakesaperfectgridandeachblockhasaninnerpatio.ThePasseigdeGràciaislocatedattheheartofEixampleandsplitsitintotwoparts:theLeftEixampleandtheRightEixample.Therewecanalso findLaPedreraand laCasaBatlló, twoof themostknownGaudí’sbuildings.TheEixampleisasaferesidencialthathasanactivenightlifeandapleasantcoffeesculture.Itisabeautifulquartiertohaveastroll,enjoythegloriousarchitectureandtowatchpeoplepassbyfromoneofthemanyterraces.3:SantsMontjuïc:Montjuïc,whichmeansJewishMountain,ithasturnedintoausefulpointofreferenceinBarcelona.TheCastleontopofitoffersgorgeousviewsofthecity.Therearealotofparksandmuseums.At the north hillside there is the Poble Sec, amountain quartierwhere the apartments are usually small.Sants,locatedtothenorth,itissimilartoEixample.Inbothquartierstherearequitealotofimmigrants.ThePobleSechastwoundergroundlines,whilstSantsareaisoneofthebestonesreferringtopublictransportandcommunications(threeundergroundlinesandatrainstationwherealltrainsstop).4:LesCorts:Itonlytakes15minutestogettherefromthecitycentre.ThereisagoodpublictransportnetthankstotheundergroundstopsLesCortsandPlaçadelCentre(bothoftheminthegreenline).

LesCorts isavery importantfinancialdistrict inBarcelona,withagoodrangeoffacilitiesandclosetothemosthistoricalandpicturesqueofthecity.Wecanalsofindthereotherpointsof interest likethefootballstadiumofFutbolClubBarcelona.AttheothersideoftheDiagonalthere isPedralbes,thewell-offareaofBarcelonawithhugegreenareas,liketheCervantesParkorthePalauReialdePedralbes.5:Sarriá-SantGervasi:ItisthelastindependentvillagethatwasannexedtoBarcelonain1921.Itusedtobe the residencial area of the well-off society during the second half of XIX century. That is why thetraditional architecture of the ancient heart of the quartier is featured with the typology of summermodernisthouses.ItisoneofthemostexpensiveareasofBarcelonatoliveandthereisapoornetofpublictransport.YoucanonlygettherebyFGC(FerrocarrilesdelaGeneralitatdeCatalunya).6:Gracia:Gràciaused tobean independent villageuntil theendofXIX centuryandevennowadays theneighbourhoodissmallandaclosecommunity.Inthisquartierlivetogetherawiderangeofracesandithasagreatconcentrationofinternationalrestaurants.Inaddition,itisthecentreofnightlifeofthecityallyearround. And, in contrast, in the ancient centre, we can enjoy several smallsquaresandstreetsthatremindusofthepastofavillagethatwasindependentofBarcelonauntil1904.Theapartmentsinthisquartierarequitebigandtherentalprices,moderate.Werecommendyoutosearchforapartmentsthatareclosetooneoftheundergroundstopsthatexistinthearea.
8:NouBarris:Itcomesfromthoseneighbourhoodsthatgrewinthe50sand70sinthatoldBarcelonathattook in crowds of families that just arrived from other parts of Spain. Lately, the infrastructures,communicationsandservicesofthisareahaveimprovedalot,increasingthequalityoflifeofitsinhabitants.9:SantAndreu:Itisprobablythequartierthemostaffectedbytheurbanreorganisationofthecity.Thisisaquartierofagriculturaloriginsthatevolvedtoanindustrialterritoryandwithalotofcommercialactivity.Itischangingatgreatspeed,andthatiswhythemostmodernandinnovativefeaturesofBarcelonaaremixingtherewiththeinnerancientcentreofthequartier(whichwas,actually,theformerindependentvillagecalledSant Andreu del Palomar. It is a compact and charming area full of squares and small streets, wherecommercialandculturallifeoffersagreatrangeofentertainmenttoneighboursandvisitors.10:SantMartí:IttakesthepastandthefutureofBarcelona.ThismixingoftimesisspeciallyreflectedinthetransformationofancientindustrialPoblenouintothenewtechnologicaldistrictof22@.Inthisquartierthereisamixingoftheeconomicactivity(withcompaniesandoffices)andtheeducative(universitycampus)andresidentialone(urbanisationofstreetsandbuildings).Sourceofinformation:
