IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, cosmopoli-tan Barcelona has experienced a tremendousupsurge in visitors because of its superb endow-ment of culture (art, music, opera, architectu-re...), leisure activities, varied and healthy gastro-nomy, sports, shopping and a rich, lively nightli-fe. In short an activity for every mood, everyoneand each season of the year. Its benign climatecontributes decisively to the sustainable growthof the passenger cruise industry.

Visitors have a wide range of options to enjoyRoman, medieval or art-nouveau Barcelona orventure on short sightseeing trips to spectacularbeaches (the rugged Costa Brava), or the magni-ficent countryside. The traveller is sure to bespellbound by the charming historical townsand villages (Romanesque itineraries or Jewishquarters). France and Andorra are at a mere twohours drive from Barcelona!

1992 Olympic Games was the latest occasionthat Barcelona and its port showed the worldthis unique blend of old and new (the fascina-tion of history, art, and tradition with the effi-ciency of design, the comfort of modernity and

simplicity of life). Ever since, the city, the Portof Barcelona and other entities have endeavou-red to live up to their image by constantlyimproving services and infrastructures. It hasbeen successful. The Port of Barcelona becamethe Mediterranean turnaround port par exce-llence with an all time record of 1.050.000 pas-sengers in 2003!!

Constant refurbishing of the port is a must tokeep our leading position. The opening of thesecond mouth in June 2003, provided easy and

safe access to the World Trade Center cruiseship terminals. The lengthening, landscapingand road access redevelopment project of the"Adossat" pier –now underway- will certainlyincrease and improve the mooring space avai-lable so as to accommodate up to 5 mega shipssimultaneously. Thus, we are ready to receivethe largest ships in the world.

Safety and security, however, are of the upmostimportance for us. All personnel in our port arehighly trained to undertake all procedures andoperations in a most secure and safe manner.Police authorities and other law enforcemententities are working hand-in-hand with us tokeep up with the tremendous challengescurrent times demand. Moreover, our terminalsfully comply with the requirements set forth bythe IMO and perform periodic fire and othersafety drills. In fact, our terminals have been

spot-checked by the U.S. Coast Guard inspectionofficers, and other U.S. agencies and we havepassed the test with flying colours.

The Port of Barcelona is also very protective of theenvironment. We abide by and enforce Marpol andother international environmental regulations.Wealso provide ships with waste collection, garbageand sewage disposal, as well as recycling services.

But we don't work alone. Since January 2000,Creuers del Port de Barcelona is concessionaire

of 4 of our terminals and is constantly refurbis-hing their facilities. In 2005 Costa Crociere willstart building their first terminal to operate crui-se vessels of their corporate group.

One of Barcelona’s strongest assets though is itspeople. Literally thousands of professionals arediligently at work, day and night, to supply thecruise industry with the best agents, hostesses, security personnel, tourist guides, coaches, longshoremen, etc.

The city of Barcelona is co-founder and a memberof the Medcruise Association and takes an activepart in promoting Mediterranean ports as touristdestinations. In the last five years the Port ofBarcelona has been honoured with variousawards by Dream World Cruise Destinationsmagazine in recognition of its efforts to advancethe industry at large.

TERMINAL ATerminal A is, historically, the most efficient termi-nal of the Port of Barcelona. Its distribution can beeasily adapted to the different operations: embar-kation, disembarkation, transit.

Creuers del Port de Barcelona SA,current concessionaire for this ter-minal is planning for 2006 to incre-ase its surface by demolishing

some of the original structure thatdivides the terminal in two separate

areas. With this project, the surface of theterminal will be big enough as to attend the dropoff of the disembarkation luggage of the biggestships in the world in turnaround operations, aswell as the check-in. One passenger gangway isalso included in the project.
