Discover St. CroixKnown as “The Big Island,” St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and you might be surprised to find that its history is really quite distinct from the others.Christiansted Harbor photo © Lee Lashley
D id you know St. Croix was first inhabited more than 2,000 years ago? The Arawak Indians made it their home, until the warring Caribs overtook the island they called Ayay and forced the peaceful Ar-
awaks out. Did you know Salt River, St. Croix is the only positively documented site
on what is now U.S. territory associated with Columbus’ exploration of the New World in 1493? He made a hasty exit because of the less than friendly welcome. Columbus claimed it for Spain and renamed the island Santa Cruz, or Holy Cross, but the Caribs and the Spanish battled over the island for more than a century.
Did you know St. Croix has flown seven different flags? The island was under the rule of the Spanish, Dutch, English, French, Knights of Malta (who renamed it St. Croix) and Danish before becoming part of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Did you know sugar was king on St. Croix? Unlike its volcanic sister islands, St. Croix is hilly and steep to the north and east but slopes into rich fertile plains ideal for growing sugar. In the 18th century it was known as the Garden of the Caribbean. The ruins of more than 100 sugar mills dot the island. The last sugar harvest took place in 1966, but the tradition of making rum from sugar is still an important part of St. Croix’s economy and culture.

CHRISTIANSTEDIts natural harbor has made Christiansted an important seaport since the 1700s. The streets are filled with historic colonial buildings and churches. Be sure to visit the Christiansted National Historic Site to see the old Danish Customs House, Fort Christiansvaern and the Government House, built in 1747, with its grand welcoming arms staircase.
Frederiksted is perched on the west end, giving St. Croix its other nickname, Twin City. It was here that Danish Governor Peter Von Scholten announced the proclamation of the emancipation of slaves in 1848. There are many historic churches and other colonial sites throughout the town, such as Fort Frederik, built in 1752, just steps from the Frederiksted Pier cruise ship dock.

St. George Village Botanical GardenWith more than 1,500 native and exotic species of plants, a walk through
the St. George Village Botanical Garden offers a tour of St. Croix’s nature and history. The 16-acre estate includes the ruins of a 19th
century Danish sugar plantation and a 2,000-year old Amerindian settlement, both registered with the National Registry of Historic Sites. Themed gardens emphasize the cultural and historical value of the plants as food, medicine, fi-ber, color dyes, and building materials. The Garden’s Herbarium Collection fea-tures more than 5,000 dried and pressed indigenous plant specimens. A historic collection includes artifacts from the pre-Columbian and plantation eras and a post-Emancipation workers’ cottage houses 500-plus volumes on Caribbean flora and history.
Guided tours are available and a museum store offers botanically themed gifts, books and art. The St. George Village frequently hosts workshops and educational presentations, plant sales, art shows, a summer mango festival and an Earth Day EcoFair. Visit www.sgvbg.org for more information.
Living HistoryIf you want an authentic walk through history, a visit to the Whim Museum
www.stcroixlandmarks.com offers an up close and personal glimpse of days gone by. Sponsored by the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism
and the St. Croix Landmarks Society, the new living museum at the restored 18th century plantation, initiated in 2015, highlights demonstrations and activi-ties reflecting the historic crafts, cuisine and daily life of colonial St. Croix.
The island’s sole remaining sugar plantation, Whim Plantation includes a great house, slave quarters, mill and factory complex. In the central yard area, fishermen, cooks, bakers, blacksmiths, basket weavers, seamstresses, laborers and goldsmiths ply their trades using traditional methods passed on through the generations, offering visitors a fascinating interactive experience.
A cultural tradition-bearer certification for youths was also initiated as part of the living museum program. Local elders, historians and preservationists share their knowledge of cultural preservation, historic interpretation and more to ensure that the history and culture of St. Croix lives on.

Buck Island Reef National Monument was established in 1961 and includes both the 176-acre island and surrounding waters. 180 native species of plants can be found along the hiking trails and it is a nesting spot for endangered and threatened species such as the hawksbill turtle and the brown pelican. An underwater trail explores the eastern tip of the elkhorn coral barrier reef surrounding two thirds of the island with coral formations, deep grottos, sea fans and more than 250 species of fish. Voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic, in part because of its pristine condition. There are no facilities or restaurants, so be sure to pack a lunch and bring refreshments. For more information visit www.nps.gov/buis/index.htm

THE DANISH CONNECTION Throughout history, Denmark and the U.S. Virgin Islands have maintained a close bond of friendship that remains strong to this day. The Danish fl ag fl ew over the islands for many years and Danish infl uences are an integral part of island culture. You’ll see a hint of Denmark wherever you go. Many streets, towns, neighborhoods and historic sites have Danish names, as well as many of the islands’ prominent families.
St. Thomas and St. Croix each host chapters of the Friends of Denmark Society, and the Danes have a reciprocal West Indies Society. The organizations plan alternate trips, opening their homes to one another, promote concerts, plan cultural events and assist each other with historic research. 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the transfer of the Virgin Islands from Danish to U.S. rule. A government appointed Centennial Commission was formed to plan festivities to commemorate the historical event, and a petition for a commemorative stamp has been submitted to the U.S. Post Offi ce.
