ensure good housekeeping

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

• Inadequate or poor housekeeping may result in the following types of accidents:– Tripping over loose objects on floors or

stairs– Slipping on wet, greasy or slippery floors– Bumping against protruding misplaced

materials– Injuries due to falling objects (improper

storage)

ELEMENTS OF GOOD HOUSEKEEPING

• Proper layout of work area and machines– Ample working space– Provide racks or container for tools or materials– Keep passageway free of any materials– Floors, walls and ceilings are kept clean– Regular and efficient disposal programme for

rubbish, trash and unwanted materials

• Material Storage– Adequate & proper storage facilities &

movement– Follow appropriate storage procedures

INTRODUCTION - MEANING OF 5S

• The term “5S” represents 5 Japanese words:

–Seiri - Sorting (Organisation)

–Seiton - Arranging

–Seiso - Cleaning

–Seiketsu - Maintaining

–Shitsuke - Self-discipline

PRACTISING OF 5S

• Seiri - Sorting / Organisation– Step 1: Identify all items that are not of

any use anymore.– Step 2: Sorting out the unnecessary

items and apply appropriate action.– Step 3: Display a disposal notice to

inform owner.

PRACTISING OF 5S

• Seiton (Arranging)– Step 1: Observe how the items are being

arranged in the workplace. Systematically or anyhow?

– Step 2: Plan where the various item are to be located, according to the frequency of usage.

– Step 3: Maintain a list of items with their locations recorded. Labeling.

• Seiso (Cleaning)– Step 1: Clean up work areas by dividing

the work area and responsibilities.– Step 2: Identify what and how to clean.

• Seiketsu (Maintaining Standards)– Step 1: Train the workers to be

constantly alert and attentive in spotting abnormalities visually.

– Step 2: Develop procedures for abnormality identified.

• Shisuke (Discipline)– Step 1: Train workers to form good

housekeeping habit.– Step 2: Implement a checklist.

• Three phases– Phase 1: Promotion: Newsletter, poster,

slogan– Phase 2: Implementation: Competition,

tours– Phase 3: Evaluation: 3rd parties

audits/checklists
