A 1927 27B 350cc Harley-Davidson ‘Peashooter’ sold at the Sydney auction for $18,000

CLASSIC and veteran English cars out-shone their Australian and US counter-parts in Shannons Custom & CollectableAuction at Meguiar’s MotorEx on July 21,making a major contribution to the event’sbottom line of nearly $1 million.

The top sale of the 63-lot auction was aniconic circa 1921 Vauxhall 30/98 E-TypeVelox Tourer that sold for $220,000 to anoverseas enthusiast who took advantage ofthe sliding Australian dollar.

Introduced in 1913, the 30/98 was thefirst British sports car to reach 160km/h inproduction form and was considered a fas-ter and more nimble road car in the early1920s than a Bentley 3.0 litre.

The 30/98 auctioned had been in thehands of the same Australian owner for 45years and was painstakingly rebuilt froma chassis frame and back axle upwardsover a 20-year period.

Another English veteran to star atMotorEx was a 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom ITourer offered in ‘‘project’’ condition thatsold after the hammer for $60,000.

The Phantom was the near culminationof a long-term restoration project by a Syd-ney panel beater and required a completeinterior fit-out to complete.

Other English cars to post strong resultswere a beautiful and former trophy-winning ‘‘Clotted Cream’’ with red leatherupholstery 1958 Jaguar XK150 Drop HeadCoupe that sold for $100,000, a restored1959 MGA Twin Cam roadster, one of just

127 right-hand drive export models built,that sold above its high estimate for $53,000and a 1955 Morris Minor 1000 Sedan modi-fied at a cost of about $30,000 that sold withno reserve for well over its pre-sale estim-ate for $15,000.

The two English Daimlers in the auctionalso sold well, with a 1993 Double Six V12Saloon, offered with no reserve, sellingabove its high estimate for $20,500 afterstrong floor bidding, while a beautifullypresented black with chrome wire wheels1963 2.5-litre V8 Saloon sold for $17,000.

Other excellent sales included a 1976Holden LX Torana SL/R 5000 replica sedanthat sold for $41,000, a 1959 BorgwardIsabella Coupe that made $26,000 and a2002-built De Joux Maserati special inneed of work to be eligible for Australianregistration that brought $55,000.

A collection of nine ‘‘no reserve’’ HarleyDavidson motorcycles from a large privatecollection sold on estimate, with the topsales being $18,000 for a 1927 27B 350cc‘‘Peashooter’’, while a 1946 U Model 1200ccsolo in ‘‘project’’ condition sold for $16,000,a 1942 WLA 750cc solo went for $14,000, avery stylish 1967 Aermacchi Ala Verde250cc ‘‘Cafe Racer’’ (built under HarleyDavidson ownership) made $7300 and arare 1963 Harley-Davidson Topper 160ccScooter sold for $4500.
