Muhammad Ali emerged as a new leader after Napoleon failed to win Egypt

He had been sent by the Ottomans in an expeditionary force to win Egypt but he broke free from their control

From |831 he fought some battles and gained control of Syria and Arabia

His allies and him were recognized as hereditary rulers of Egypt

He made reforms in the military and the economy He directed agriculture in Egypt to a plantation of cotton

and brought Egypt to international marketplace But peasants were forced to grow cash crops instead of

food crops

MILITARY AND ECONOMIC REFORM

Isma´il (Muhammed´s grandson) continued the efforts to modernize Egypt

He supported the construction of the Suez Canal (a human-made waterway that cut throught the Isthmus of Suez)

It connected the Red Sea to the Mediterranean It was built with French money and Egyptian labor It opened in 1869 Ismail´s projects of modernization were expensive and

Egypt had a big debt with Europe The British ended up getting control of the canal and

occupied Egypt in 1882
