AzAmazing EveningSM Event – Bangkok (Klong Toey), Thailand 12Dec17Discovering Bangkok’s Ancient City
Celebrate an enactment of the Festival of Lights, known as Loi Krathong. Starting in the Southern part of the park not far from the entrance you will find the old market town. Here you can witness a replica of a small rural village and get an
impression of traditional life of ancient times. The traditional town houses you can see here are real; they were taken from Yan Nawa, one of the older districts in Bangkok. Journey to The Sanphet Prasat Palace & Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall,
where green and gold cruciform palaces, temples, shrines and stupas adorn a lush 200-acre site. Built under the order of Rama I in 1782, these illustrious grounds, known to Westerners as the Grand Palace, are the official residence of the King
who uses it now for special events only. Dramatic lighting welcomes visitors to a world of exotic culture and ritual as the Loi Krathong ceremony unfolds. Krathong, lotus-shaped baskets, are released with intention along flowing water.
Symbolic of the release of worn-out emotions and behaviours, the ceremony is a healing, rejuvenating time of celebration that resonates deeply throughout Thai culture. Marvel at the ornate beauty of regional dances, watch crafts
demonstrations by local artisans and enjoy light refreshments for an evening of sweet release and sweeter memories.

JR 14Nov17 | 10 Night Arabian Gulf & Emirates VoyageEXPLORE DUBAI’S STRIKING STYLE DURING YOUR CRUISE HOLIDAY Dubai can already be
mistaken for a movie set featuring a futuristic metropolis, and there are big plans still in the works. In
the middle of the desert where almost nothing existed 20 years ago, there are so many building
projects that foreign construction crews vastly outnumber citizens. Everything is the biggest, tallest,
and the first of its kind, including manmade islands shaped like palm trees and the world’s first
underwater hotel. It’s a striking collection of styles, including modern interpretations of Islamic
architecture. If the planet’s largest shopping mall doesn’t appeal, traditional souks do still exist,
including a gold souk housing over 200 retail shops.
THE NORWAY OF ARABIA. Located on the Straight of Hormuz between Oman, Iran, and the United
Arab Emirates, Khasab is small, but far from sleepy. Khasab was virtually unreachable by land for
centuries until a modern coastal road that hugs the twists and turns of the spectacular coastline was
recently opened. This relative isolation has contributed to its considerable steeped-in-time charm and
welcoming residents. Renowned as “the Norway of Arabia” for its beautiful fjords and massive cliffs
(but far more temperate climate) Khasab is best enjoyed from the water. Go for a dhow cruise—a
traditional Arab sailing boat—and get up close and personal with the spectacular scenery and the
dolphins that live in the aquamarine waters. Back on dry land, catch a glimpse of Khasab’s Portuguese
colonial past with a trip to Khasab Castle. Built in the 17th century, the castle has been restored to its
former glory and houses a unique collection of items that help tell the history and heritage of this
fascinating area. And be sure to stop by the Sikkit market in the centre of town to pick up the region’s
main export—palm dates.
THE PLACE OF DREAMS Situated just off the coast of Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf, the island nation
Bahrain with its dreamy capital Al Manamah, is an oasis from the surrounding desert landscape. A
designated capital of Arab culture, this one-time pearl-trading centre is no mirage—attractions like the Al-
Fateh Mosque (one of the largest in the world), the Corniche al-Fateh (seaside promenade), and the UNESCO
World Heritage Site Bahrain Fort are the real deal. (Although it could be said they all look like the stuff from
dreams of far off Arabian lands.)
Sharpen your haggling skills at the Manama Souq where silk scarves, pearls, and brilliant yellow 24ct gold
jewellery are just some of the items on offer. Or head a short distance outside of town to Janabiya to the
king’s camel farm to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat (and maybe even go for a ride on
one, if you’re lucky). But no visit to Bahrain would be complete without a stop at the Tree of Life. Just a few
miles south of Al Manamah, this mysterious tree defies science and has managed to not only survive, but
thrive, in the middle of the dry desert with no access to water.
CRUISE TO MUSCAT AND TRY YOUR HAND AT BARGAINING FOR EXOTIC SPICES AND HANDCRAFTS IN
THE CITY’S OLDEST MARKET An important trading port between East and West since the first century,
Muscat's influence once extended as far as East Africa and Zanzibar. While much of the city’s
construction is new, it all displays traditional Arabic stylistic elements, creating a handsome and
cohesive whole that incorporates a rich history. Two seemingly invincible mountainside forts from
the 1500s flank the palace of the sultan, though today they are both museums. A major highlight is
the Muttrah Souq, Muscat's oldest market. Colourful and bustling, it is a fascinating place to browse
as well as barter for exotic spices, traditional handicrafts, or gold and frankincense.
A VIBRANT CITY WITH ITS EYE ON THE FUTURE Doha is an ancient city in the midst of a modern renaissance
as evidenced by stunning new buildings, resorts, shopping malls, and sporting venues emerging from the
desert landscape like a futuristic oasis. And these aren’t just your standard bricks and mortar—there is some
serious architectural prowess on display, like the Museum of Islamic Art designed by noted architect IM Pei.
Head inside to view priceless Islamic art that spans 1,400 years and three continents, not to mention Alain
Ducasse’s restaurant, IDAM. After a glimpse into the past, make your way to the Souq Waqif, the renovated
Arabic market quarter. Wander the maze-like corridors and shop for aromatic spices, colourful textiles, and
gold jewellery. Be sure to also visit the falcon market, a symbol of prestige in this part of the world (in fact,
falcons often travel with their owners in business class!). If you’ve looking to unwind after the hustle and
bustle of the market, make way for the Al-Corniche, the long seaside promenade that curves around Doha
Bay. From here you can catch breath taking views of the man-made Palm Tree Island and the city’s
skyscrapers.
AN EXCITING MIX OF OLD AND NEW As the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest emirate by area, Abu Dhabi is home to the seat of government, the Al Nahyan royal family, and a population of
approximately 20% Emirati citizens and 80% expats. But its commitment to local culture and heritage, combined with international influences, is what makes Abu Dhabi an intriguing, exciting, and hospitable mix of
new and old. To see a shining example of the new, visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. With 82 domes, 24-carat gold-gilded chandeliers, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, this architectural wonder
offers a glimpse into the area’s soul. To learn more about the past, visit Abu Dhabi Heritage Village and be sure to take part in the very modern tradition of taking a selfie with a camel. When it’s time to beat the
desert heat, go for a stroll along the waterfront of Corniche Road to find restaurants and cafés perfect for people watching, not to mention Corniche Beach. And if you crave the cool comfort of air conditioning, shop
to your heart’s content at one of the many upscale malls found throughout the city.
