Report by the Honorary Colonel Larry Stevenson

Colonel Lawrence N. (Larry) Stevenson, Honorary Colonel, The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada"Rifleman esprit de corps is very apparent"Colonel Lawrence N. (Larry) Stevenson, Honorary Colonel, The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada

I look back on this past year with pride at an outstanding regiment which has not only achieved its tasks but has surpassed them with ease. Having served many years ago with the PPCLI and the Canadian Airborne Regiment I am truly astounded at the ability of this Regiment to train and deploy to the highest standards with the Regular Force, while at the same time handling other demanding jobs. I do believe this is because of the strong “Rifleman esprit de corps” which has been instilled by our past leaders, be they Commanding Officers, Officers or NCO’s - the results are very apparent.

I compliment LCol Peter St Denis, CD and his full complement of officers as well as CWO Mark Shannon, CD and his NCOs for a job well done. I have known many Commanding Officers in the Army over the years and I can say that LCol St Denis is one of the finest. He always puts the interests of riflemen first. Having said that, he and his leadership team have been able to accomplish great tasks, thanks primarily to the superb professionalism

of our riflemen.

Having just finished a great book, “Moment of Battle: The Twenty Clashes that Changed the World” by Jim Lacey and Williamson Murray, I would recommend it to all professional soldiers. Our Regiment of course played a vital role in one of those battles, the Normandy Campaign, as our brave soldiers landed on the beaches and were the first to break through Hitler’s Atlantic Wall. This June we will be sending 24 members of the Regiment and 2 bandsmen to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. I would like to thank Lionel Goffart, who from his own funds, has provided for the complete sponsorship of the Regiment’s trip. Lionel has been a keen supporter of this Regiment for many years. Another great military book I read this year was “One Day in August” by David O’Keefe. This book answered a question I have had for many years which is “Why did we raid Dieppe in 1942?” I won’t give away the punch line but suffice it to say that I finally understand why so many fine Canadian soldiers were asked to give their lives in this important clash in WW II.

This has been a difficult year for the Canadian Forces as the Army must deal with limited funds for the first time in many years, given the Government's increased focus on balancing the federal budget. I suspect that we will need to face similar austerity for a few years and thus we will all be challenged to make sure that we maintain our operational readiness in spite of these restrictions. I have had a number of meetings and attended Conferences with Reserves 2000 this year and this organization is committed to making sure that the Reserves continue to play an important role in the Canadian Army despite the budget cutbacks. The Prime Minister has clearly stated that he wants to see the Reserves continue to play an important role in our Canadian Army.

There have also been many other individual efforts which must also be recognized such as Capt Adam West who after much work completed a full set of Regimental Standing Orders. This was a monumental project which was executed with great professionalism. I

In Memoriam 2014-2015

“WE WILL REMEMBER THEM”

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;They sit no more at familiar tables of home;

They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;They sleep beyond England’s foam.
