VII – Why We Care

• Safety – United States Highway Fatalities remain at about 42,000 - a new approach to preventing crashes is required to substantially improve highway safety

• Mobility – Congestion continues to worsen – a new approach is required to have significant impact on the current congestion trend.

• Active Safety – Keep Crashes from occurring (cost to society in lives and $)

• Passive Safety – Identify “issues” on the road that can be corrected (snow/ice, potholes, geometric deficiencies, etc.)

• Traffic Management – Every vehicle is a probe, every vehicle can receive real-time traffic reports
