Why the
Change?
We’re aligning with how the market purchases databases
Better fit for cloud and hybrid deployment
Number of Physical
Cores
How will customers purchase cores going forward?
Number of physical
cores
X Core Factor
TRANSITIONING CUSTOMERS – PROC TO CORE• Customers with proc licenses renewing SA:• Proc licenses converted into core licenses at 1:4 for
standard/enterprise and 1:8 for datacenter• Customers running more than 1:4/1:8 must provide proof at
renewal• Customers buy 2012 per-core SA at renewal• SQL 2012 core PUR and product list apply, whether or not customer
upgraded
• Customers with proc licenses not renewing SA:• If customer upgrades to 2012, each processor license receives a
fixed “core equivalent” value as if they had converted.• 2008 R2 PUR applies if running 2008 R2• 2012 PUR applies if running 2012
Agenda
1. SQL 2012 – new capabilities2. SQL CAL uplift3. Edition changes4. Proc to core5. EE Server & CAL retiring6. New rules for virtualization
PRE-GA EA/EAP CUSTOMER WITH SERVER & CAL– Existing EE installations can be upgraded to SQL
2012 under server+CAL model, but:• Technical limitation : 20-core per instance..• Legal limitations:
– 20-core max on the server when SQL is installed in physical OS– 20-hardware-threads accessed maximum cap when SQL is
installed in virtual OS – legal limitation -.
– Purchase EE in server+CAL model until EA expires– Buy 2012 CALs for these installations – After EA expires :
• Buy server license for tier 2 and BI; and• Buy core license for tier 1.
CUSTOMER WITH SERVER & CAL NOT UNDER SA– Purchase EE in server+CAL model until 1.7.2012– consider entering into an EAP for SA on existing
inventory and longer runway to implement any changes.– After 1.7.2012:
• Buy server license for tier 2 and BI; and• Buy core license for tier 1.

WHAT’S CHANGING IN VIRTUALIZATION?1. Per-core makes licensing individual VMs easier!2. When licensing individual VMs in per-core
model, minimum 4 core licenses per VM3. Unlimited virtualization still requires all physical
cores to be licensed with EE, but now also requires SA
4. License mobility is a right under SA, hence available to all editions
5. Mobility now extends beyond the datacenter to hosters and public cloud
Transitioning Customers to new Virt. rules• Tell customers about the enhanced value of SA• Customers renewing SA get the new benefits• Customers existing SA post GA:– If running 2008R2 -> 2008 R2 PUR applies = standard
mobility (no cloud) and no unlimited virtualization– If running 2012 -> 2012 PUR applies = no mobility and
no unlimited virtualization.
