Originally launched in 2010, Alabama’s Hangout Music Festival is now recognized as one of the largest weekend festivals in the U.S. Taking place between Friday, May 20 and Sunday, May 22, the second-annual festival will play host to over 70 bands and is expecting a turnout of over 35,000 at-tendees from all over the nation.
Located in the sce-nic town of Gulf Shores, Ala., the Hangout Festival quickly gained popularity during its inaugural event, as its stages are located on the white, sandy beaches, offering guests a unique musical experience not available at any other festi-val. Though it has become a popular event during its short existence, it almost never came into fruition.
Shortly before the fi rst annual festival launched last year, the Gulf of Mexi-co endured the catastroph-ic Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in which an estimat-ed 5,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil spewed in the ocean each day, costing thousands of jobs in the area as well as the lives of hundreds of animals.
Fortunately, however, the spill did not halt the fi rst Hangout Music Festi-val, and the founders do-nated all proceeds of the festival to aid in cleaning up the Gulf Coast. Fol-lowing this year’s tornado tragedy in Alabama, it is uncertain whether or not the founders will donate any of the proceeds to help with the state’s recovery, but in the meantime, they hope to kick off the 2011 festival without a hitch.
Last year, the festival’s lineup featured a slew of artists, including John Legend, Ben Harper, Ray Lamontagne and Girl Talk, among many others. This year’s festival, however, has grown exponentially in size and will feature performances by Paul Si-mon, The Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Flaming Lips, Cee-Lo Green, The Avett Brothers, Bassnectar, Portugal. the Man, Girl Talk and Minus the Bear, to name a few. Hangout Festival kicks off FridayWith a strong lineup, second-annual show looks promising
“you can’t watch them and frown, it’s impos-sible.”
Joining Dangerous Ponies is Birdlips, a two-piece indie/folk act hailing from Char-lottesville, Va., de-scribed as a band that “mix[es] organic in-struments with looped percussion, creating an earthy and atmo-spheric album, not unlike Emmylou Har-ris’ acclaimed Wreck-ing Ball…[swooning]
with vocal harmonies and melodic turns that belie the musicians’ youth” by The Wash-ington Times.
Locals Letters Home (with members from Linus, Look Mexico, Sendaway Stranger and Wavelets), Air-craft (with members of Werepossoum and JamesDUNK) and Lucy (with members from Linus, Jack Jackie and No Humanity) will be opening the show.
