Located in the sce- nic town of Gulf Shores, Ala., the Hangout Festival quickly gained popularity during its inaugural event, as its stages are located on the white, sandy beaches, offering guests a unique musical experience not available at any other festi- val. Though it has become a popular event during its short existence, it almost never came into fruition. Shortly before the first annual festival launched last year, the Gulf of Mexi- co endured the catastroph- ic Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in which an estimat- ed 5,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil spewed in the ocean each day, costing thousands of jobs in the area as well as the lives of hundreds of animals. Fortunately, however, the spill did not halt the first Hangout Music Festi- val, and the founders do- nated all proceeds of the festival to aid in cleaning up the Gulf Coast. Fol- lowing this year’s tornado tragedy in Alabama, it is uncertain whether or not the founders will donate any of the proceeds to help with the state’s recovery, but in the meantime, they hope to kick off the 2011 festival without a hitch. Last year, the festival’s lineup featured a slew of artists, including John Legend, Ben Harper, Ray Lamontagne and Girl Talk, among many others. This year’s festival, however, has grown exponentially in size and will feature performances by Paul Si- mon, The Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Flaming Lips, Cee-Lo Green, The Avett Brothers, Bassnectar, Portugal. the Man, Girl Talk and Minus the Bear, to name a few.
