EDUCATIONAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK
The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery (Mark van Doren)
פ' מצורע –דבר תורה
The חובות הלבבות writes that when one speaks לשון הרע
about someone else, the speaker loses all his מצוות ומעשים
!to the other, which is a frightening thought טובים
The מפרשים attempt to find a רמז to that idea in this
week’s פרשה as the סדרה begins with the words זאת תהיה
תורות that the - תורת המצורע ביום טהרתו of the מצורע are
only his - ביום טהרתו – until he does תשובה he has lost all!
The 'אלשי''ך הק explains a פסוק in תהלים ס''ט where דהע''ה
bemoans:.ישיחו בי ישבי שער ונגינות שותי שכר . He complains
that although others are talking about him, and thus he
could gain from this, he tells us that these people are the
lowest in society, thus there is no relevant benefit from
their לשוה''ר !
The פרדס יוסף adds that since a person might ח''ו come
to שמים with another’s עבירות ר''ל he may become
confused as to his own identity – and for that reason one
should say the appropriate פסוק before the end of
which alludes to his name – so that he will know whoשמו''ע
he is!
The מדרש on this week’s פרשה is famous when the רוכל
announced מאן בעי סמא דחיים and even ר' ינאי ran out to
see what this potion was … Perhaps we can explain, that
he wasn’t offering a potion that added life – only the מלך
can grant that – rather he was announcing thatמלכי המלכים
he had an elixir that preserved one’s life – that allowed
one to retain one’s attainment of תורה ומצוות - the perfect
– then - נצור לשונך מרע – and revealed the secret - סם חיים
he is a - חפץ חיים אוהב ימים לראות טוב – we would do well
to learn this lesson today as well.
FROM THE DESK OF THE HEADTEACHER
On Monday morning, the building reverberated to the
sound of music in our Yiddish Song Concert. For well over an hour, every class in the school sang a song in Yiddish that they had learned with their Rebbes. The boys not only learned the song but thanks to the Rebbes, also understood what the words meant and indeed shared this with everyone else before starting their class songs.
In a school like ours, where Yiddish is so important and is
what we are teaching the boys as a foreign language, it was wonderful to hear this special language come to life. My thanks to the Rebbes for preparing their boys, to Rebbe Katz on the keyboard for all the classes and particularly to the Menahel for organising this lovely whole-school occasion; it was very special.
I know some parents asked me at Parents Evening if they were invited to attend. Not this time but hopefully next year, we will be able to make this happen.
Good Shabbos
