Weekly Halachah—Parshas Vayigash R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
May I bid before Shabbos in an on‐line auction which will end on Shabbos?
Two halachic concerns prohibit scheduling purchases to take effect on Shabbos: • Concern lest one record the transaction on Shabbos, and • A prohibition against actions which complete a kinyan (formal transaction) on Shabbos.
Nonetheless, there are grounds for leniency regarding both ele‐ments in an on‐line auction: • In an automated transaction, one is not involved at all on Shabbos, and so there is no concern for writing.
• The kinyan is not completed on Shabbos; the transaction does not take place until one pays for the purchase.
Therefore, many halachic authorities permit bidding on such an auction before Shabbos.

QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS VAYIGASH BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: Why did Yehuda feel it necessary to repeat to Yoseph the whole series of events that led to Binyamin being brought to Egypt? Second Aliyah: (42:2) How could “Egypt” hear Yoseph’s cries before “Pharaoh’s House”? Third Aliyah: (45:10) What was special about Goshen that made Yoseph choose it as a place for his family to live? Fourth Aliyah: (45:24) Why did Yoseph feel it necessary to tell his brothers not to quarrel on the road? Fifth Aliyah: Why is the list of people who came down to Egypt in our parsha so much longer than the list that appears at the beginning of Sefer Shemos? Sixth Aliyah: (47:9) Why does Yaakov seem to be complaining about his life to Pharaoh? Seventh Aliyah: Why did Yoseph institute a policy of bartering everyone’s property for food, instead of just giving the citizens of Egypt the food outright, as a gift?
