T he past twelve months have beenan exciting period for The Frick

Collection.Wehostedanexhibitionofworksfrom the Mauritshuis in The Hague, whichwas, by every measure, the most popularand successful in our history; we welcomedXavierF.SalomonasournewPeterJaySharpChief Curator; and, in June, we announcedplans toenhanceandexpandtheCollectionand the Frick Art Reference Library. As theFrick continues to evolve and to considerlong-term improvements, our priority is toremain true to the vision of Henry ClayFrickbyofferingexhibitionsandeducationalprograms that inspire our visitors to learnmoreaboutourholdingsandtotakepleasurein thecontemplationof art. Such initiatives, whichareacornerstoneoftheFrick’smission, wouldnotbepossiblewithoutthesupportofourmanygenerousfriendsandmembers.

Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Hals: Masterpieces of Dutch Painting from the Mauritshuis opened to critical acclaim inOctober 2013. Vermeer’s iconic Girl with a Pearl Earring and Carel Fabritius’s master-work The Goldfinch were the favorites ofthe exhibition, which was seen during itsthree-monthrunbymorethan235,000visi-tors.Manywhosawtheshowwereinspiredby their experience to become members.Mostnotably, ourstudentmembershipgrewsignificantly, evidence that the exhibitionattracted a young audience as well. By theend of the fiscal year, our membership had

reachedanall-timehighofnearly19,000—fourtimeswhatithadbeenlastyear.

The Mauritshuis show was by nomeans the only acclaimed special exhibi-tion on view. We presented two wonderfulinstallations primarily of sculpture, David d’Angers: Making the Modern Monument andRenaissance and Baroque Bronzes from the Hill Collection.Wealsofeatured, fortheveryfirsttimeintheUnitedStates,Parmigianino’sSchiava Turca—a jewel of Renaissance por-traiture in the tradition of the Mona Lisa. This exhibition was accompanied by anextendedcatalogueessaythatshednewlighton the identity of the sitter. Along with our exhibitions, it is thebeauty of the objects in the Frick’s perma-nentcollectionthatinspiresvisitorstoreturnto our galleries again and again. To bettershowcase these objects, this year we intro-ducedafreemobileappthatprovidesinstantaccess to content related to every work inthepermanentcollection.Userscanbrowseforinformationaboutparticularobjectsandsearch the collection by artist, genre, gal-lery location, and audio stop number. Itcan be used by visitors on-site or remotelyby art enthusiasts around the world, mak-ing our expansive resources available tousers as never before. The app—devel-oped in conjunction with students of theStevens InstituteofTechnologyand funded

by Sandeep Mathrani in honor of AyeshaBulchandani-Mathrani—demonstrates oneof the many ways the institution is usingtechnology to enhance the understandingandappreciationofourholdings.

Report of the Andrew W. Mellon Chief LibrarianStephenJ.Bury

I t has been a productive year for theLibrary,withonlineexhibitions,contin-

TheNewYorkArtResourcesConsortium(nyarc),whichconsistsof the libraries andarchives of the Frick Art Reference Library,theBrooklynMuseum,andTheMuseumofModernArt,wasawardeda$340,000grantfrom The Andrew W. Mellon Foundationto initiate a program of web archiving forspecialist art historical resources. The two-year program, known as Making the Black Hole Gray, responds to a 2012 pilot study,Reframing Collections for the Digital Age,alsofundedbytheMellonFoundation.Thestudydemonstratedthatthetypesofprintedmate-rials the nyarc libraries have historicallycollected are increasingly migrating to theweb. It revealed an urgent need to preservetheweb-basedversionsofauctioncatalogues,catalogue raisonnés, and scholarly researchprojects, aswellasartist, gallery, andmuseumWeb sites, in order to eliminate a “digitalblack hole” in the art historical record. TheFrickhas taken the lead in thisproject, andnyarc has secured funding for a NationalDigitalStewardshipfellow, whowillbebasedat the Frick to assist in the preservation of

Web archives. nyarc also obtained fundingfrom The Samuel H. Kress Foundation fortwo successive two-year fellows who willwork in public services, dividing their timeamongthethreenyarcpartners.

In the Photoarchive, the historic heartof the Library since it was established in1920, staff members began digitizing morethan330,000Americanschoolphotographs.Working closely with John Resig, Dean ofComputer Science at the Khan Academy, and using the image recognition softwareMatchEngine, they analyzed anonymousItalian school digital images and metadatafor errors and then matched them againstthe Fondazione Zeri’s holdings in orderto make identifications. A grant from TheSamuel H. Kress Foundation will enable ustodevelop thisproject intoanopen-sourcetool-kit for imageanalysis that canbeusedbyotherphotoarchives.

In July, the Frick Art Reference LibraryPeriodicalsIndex,acard-basedindexofmorethan300periodicalsheldbytheLibrary,wasmadeavailableonline throughanelectronicsubscriptionresourcepublishedbyebsco, aleading resource discovery service providerfor librariesworldwide. Inour thirdyearofa five-year project with scholarly publisherBrill, theLibraryincorporateddigitizedfilesof 326 rare auction catalogues into the ArtSalesCataloguesOnline.

Thanks to a $25,000 grant from theMetropolitan New York Library Council,we completed the third phase of our col-laborative digitization project Gilding the Gilded Age: Interior Decoration Tastes & Trends in New York City, which broughttogether materials pertaining to the Gilded

Age in New York from the Frick and theWilliam Randolph Hearst Archive (LongIsland University). Digital copies of GildedAge sales catalogues are now accessiblethroughArcade,WorldCat,andtheInternetArchive.Anonlineexhibitioncreatedusingmaterials from this collaboration providesfurtherinformationonimportantcollectorsofdecorativeartsintheGildedAgeandonthe Chinese export porcelain that was inparticulardemandatthattime.

This Kiss to the Whole World: Klimt and the Vienna Secession,anotheronlineexhibi-tion mounted by the Library and featuringrare materials from the special collectionsof nyarc, was launched as part of Vienna, City of Dreams, a three-week citywidefestival held in February and March andspearheaded by Carnegie Hall. The onlineexhibitionspotlightedtheViennaSecession(UnionofAustrianArtists)movementwhenGustav Klimt, a founding member, wasinvolved. The Web site presented digitalcopiesofthetwenty-threeViennaSecessioncatalogues (1898–1905) along with photo-graphic postcards illustrating some of theSecessionist exhibition installations. It alsoincludedtextsaboutthefamousBeethoven/Klinger Secession exhibition (1902), theKlimt retrospective exhibition (1903), andtheSecessionbuilding,aswellasaninterac-tivetimeline.DigitalcopiesoftheFrickArtReference Library’s collection of Secessioncataloguesfrom1898through1922areavail-ableinArcade.
