Introduction The Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF) was originally formed as a mutual support group for parents with children suffering from congenital heart disease with the support of doctors, nurses and medical social workers at the Cardiac Paediatric Unit of the Grantham Hospital. The parents realized that sharing experiences and information was a great benefit to all concerned. In 1994, the CHF was founded as a registered charitable organization devoted to supporting children suffering from heart disease and their families. Over the 15 years, the Foundation has grown from a small group of volunteers to an organization which has a team of full-time staff and subcommittees specializing in different issues related to children heart disease. Depending entirely on public support and donation, the volunteers and supports are the backbone of the Foundation for continuous success of CHF.

Objectives 1. To raise public awareness about congenital heart disease. 2. To provide financial and psychological support to families with children

suffering from congenital heart disease. 3. To support the development of technology and methods to detect and

treat congenital heart disease.

Services

1. Financial Support for Families Government subsidies do not cover special catheters, pacemakers, etc and the patients need to afford those expensive treatments and medical equipments by their own means. The CHF has provided support to hundreds of less well-off families through its Medical Financial Support Scheme to ensure children receive appropriate treatment. 2. Purchase of Medical Equipment New technology and medical breakthroughs are an essential part of improving treatment. The CHF helps upgrade existing facilities and services by purchasing the latest high-tech equipment, supplementing the services provided by the public hospitals. 3. Counseling Services All parents expect their baby to be born healthy. When they are told their child has a heart problem, the first reaction is fear; fear of the unknown and fear about the future. Mum and dad are full of questions - What’s wrong with my baby? What will happen next? Why did this happen? What treatment does the child need? The CHF provides counseling and support services for parents who need help. 4. House of The Heart When a child is admitted to hospital for heart surgery or treatment, parents face enormous difficulties and endure great stress. While parents try to look after their hospitalized child as best they can, they also need a place to rest. The House of the Heart (HOH), located just a few minutes walk from Queen Mary Hospital, allows parents to get a good night’s sleep and spend more time with their children. They can freshen up during the day, take a shower or just take time out to relax. It also reduces the amount of time parents spend travelling to and from the hospital.

5. Educational Programmes Most people have never heard of congenital heart disease, despite it being one of the most common congenital problems among children. Through various educational programmes and exhibitions, the CHF promotes public awareness about heart health and raises support in the community for these special children. The CHF also organises special talks so parents can learn more about caring for children with heart disease, nutritional issues and child development. 6. Parents Support Group There are many different types of problems associated with congenital heart disease and the CHF’s parents support group meets regularly to provide a channel to discuss issues of concern. Caring for these special children can be difficult and stressful, so talking to people who have the relevant experience, knowledge and understanding can give parents a sense of belonging. Parents often feel helpless, so it is a real comfort to be able to share their anxiety with others who have been through a similar experience. The CHF works to promote self help and mutual support between these families. Parents can share their experiences at the wards, in the support group meetings and during other activities. This is an effective way of enhancing communications between parents at a very difficult time. 7. Ward Visits Hospitalisation is always stressful and painful for both the children and their families. Unfortunately, spending time in hospital is a common occurrence for children with heart disease. Ward visits by professional teams and trained volunteers are essential as they stimulate the children’s development and facilitate positive thinking among parents. Volunteers help with artwork, reading and storytelling, while parent volunteers share their personal experiences, giving other parents the confidence to face the challenges ahead.

8. Developmental Programmes Because of their physical limitations, some children with heart disease encounter learning problems which affect their education, social lives and psychological development. The CHF organises a variety of programmes like the children’s choir, art workshops and leadership training programmes. As they have a lot in common, the children feel comfortable taking part in these activities together. The CHF also organises outdoor and indoor activities such as camping to strengthen the parent-child relationship and boost self confidence. 9. Medical Development And Exchange The CHF brings overseas surgeons and cardiologists to Hong Kong to share their experience with local medical staff. This is of vital importance as it helps staff keep up with all the latest advances in treatment and medical technology. The CHF also sponsors medical staff to receive further training and attend local and overseas seminars and conferences. Through Queen Mary Hospital, the CHF now provides funding so medical staff from mainland China can receive training in Hong Kong. 10. Research

The CHF provides funding for research into congenital heart disease.

Message of Chairlady

Going from strength to strength

It has been an enormous pleasure to be the Chairperson of the Children’s Heart

Foundation on the occasion of its 15th anniversary. It is a very special year, marked by a

remarkable variety of programmes and celebrations. I am delighted to report that the

CHF is in position of great strength and can look forward to a wonderful future.

I would like to start by reviewing our series of celebrations. Our 15th anniversary gala

dinner held on 29 September 2010 at the Aberdeen Marina Club was a great success.

We were honoured to have Ms. Sandra Lee, the Permanent Sectary of Food and

Health Bureau, as the Guest of Honour. She joined our Honorary Patron, Mrs. Selina

Chow, a founding member of the CHF, Dr. Maurice Leung, the Hospital Chief Executive

of Queen Mary Hospital, Dr. C. C. Luk, and number of other prominent members of the

community. The CHF children’s choir, a Shanghai Tang fashion show, salsa dancing

and live music made it an occasion to remember. We raised over HK$350,000 on the

night.

We have also published a special booklet to celebrate our anniversary. It looks at the

development of the Foundation and includes a collection of moving, inspirational stories

about our children, parents and volunteers. I must thank Mr. Jon Marsh, Mr. Charles

Lee, the editorial group and all the volunteers who contributed to the production of the

booklet. Please make sure you read a copy of this excellent publication.

As well as celebrating the anniversary with CHF donors and supporters, we have of

course also shared the occasion with our members, children and families through a

number of anniversary programmes, including the fun day at Disneyland and a 15th

anniversary camp.

It’s been a busy time for the CHF. We have introduced new services for our parents and

children, including a talk on developmental needs from a psychological point of view,

adventure based camping for young adults, ward visit training workshops, a bakery

workshop, parent-child relationship camping and a variety of different outings.

Together with the children’ choir, summer camps, heart health talks and other

tailor-made programmes, we are making great efforts to enhance the development of

children and empower our parents to face the challenges of their daily lives.

It is particularly encouraging to report that the exhibition on children’s heart health on

October 23-24 at the Fashion World in Wonderful Worlds of was a great success. About

3,000 people viewed the exhibition and almost 1,000 people participated in the free

medical health check service. We were delighted to have Ms. Toby Leung, Mr. Kanin

Ngo, Ms. Joyce Tang and Ms. Vangie Tang there as exhibition ambassadors and we

would particularly like to thank Ms. Yoyo Mung for her generous support over the year. I

am pleased to share with you that more exhibitions on heart health will be held in the

coming months to educate the public and promote public awareness about children

heart disease.

In line with our mission, the CHF continues to dedicate considerable efforts to medical

services. Following the relocation of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, we are

delighted to have established a partnership with the Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) in

providing financial support for patients and sponsoring medical equipment for children

with heart disease. The Medical Financial Support Scheme (MFSS) was officially

implemented at QMH in August 2009. The CHF has recently confirmed it will extend the

sponsorship coverage to drug treatment for congenital heart disease to ensure children

receive the appropriate treatment, at the same time easing the financial burden on their

parents. You will no doubt be aware that over the years the CHF has spent a substantial

amount of money on purchasing specialist equipment, including Holter Monitoring

Systems and 24-Ambulatory Electrocardiographic Monitors.

As part of its medical advocacy work, the CHF is pleased to have sponsored leading

surgeon Dr. Victor Tsang to operate on two complicated cases in Hong Kong early this

year. The CHF has also sponsored the training of local medical staff. One of our most

important sponsorship projects is the three-year research study by Dr. Flora Tsang on

the subject of “The impact of volume overload on right ventricular dead cell”. We look

forward to seeing the important findings from this research that will help diagnose and

treat congenital heart disease.

Thousands of children and their families have benefited from the CHF’s charitable

services. This would have not been possible without the staunch support of our

corporate sponsors, including Quality Health Care Medical Services, Mattel,

Charmonde Watches, Hasbro Far East, the Ohel Leah Synagogue Charity, Yip’s

Chemical Holdings and Swire Resources, to name a few.

In particular, I would like to thank the Nu Skin Enterprises Inc. for their loyal support

since 2003. The Children’s Heart Programme has enabled between seven and 10

children to benefited from homograft treatment each year. I would also like to extend

my sincere heartfelt thanks to Standard Chartered Bank, our very first corporate

sponsor who helped establish the Children’s Heart Foundation. I thank them for their

continued support through various programmes like the bulk mailing campaign, the

SCB flea market donation and credit card bonus point donations. We appreciate the

loyal support of these corporations, who are an important part of our support network.

As you may be aware, the CHF has had a representative on the steering committee of

the Centre of Excellence in Pediatric (CEP) project since 2008. Over the last year, the

CHF has worked hard to reflect the needs of parents and children. Our eventual goal is

to be able to arrange for a social worker and play therapist to help the children in

hospital.

I have not been able to cover all the projects and events of the last year. Nor have I

been able to mention all those who have supported us – there are simply too many of

you. I must, however, express my appreciation and admiration for all your efforts.

Through your support, we have been able to make a difference to the lives of children

suffering from a wide range of congenital heart diseases. Thank you!

Message of Chairlady Going from strength to strength

As one of the founding members of the Foundation, I never dreamed that one day I

would be the chair. It is indeed a privilege as we have always had strong leadership to

take us forward. Thanks to the contribution of former chairs the foundation has gone

from strength to strength, while always looking for new ways to strengthen our

programmes.

I must admit that the Executive Committee 2009/2010 has put in triple efforts in filling

the gaps and consolidate the status of the Foundation. Those would never be easy

tasks especially for myself, who is just an ordinary parent of two children suffering from

congenital heart disease. I am passionate about making a contribution to helping others

in the same position. Let me say that I would not have been able to achieve anything

without the support of the Executive Committee. First, we are delighted that Yasmin

and David will continue as the chairs of the fund-raising subcommittee. The CHF is

pleased to have Ms. Angela Lau contributing her talent, valuable ideas and experience

to the work of the CHF. Together, they are as important as the petrol that gives energy

to the engine of a car.

Equally important, we are glad to have the support of the medical professionals who

provide advice and suggestions, helping the advocacy work of the CHF. All the

programmes, events and projects that we carry out depend on the contributions from a

wide variety of people. Many of them, especially our parents, patients and the

volunteers, work tirelessly to make our events successful and ask nothing in return.

Their selfless dedication, hard work and commitment to the children are truly

inspirational.

Given the complicated situation of my son’s heart problem, I care about even the

smallest development related to the treatment of heart disease and any progress that

can benefit our special children. My heart is committed to every child with heart disease

and their families, no matter what their country of origin or background.

Looking ahead, I am confident that the CHF is well placed to continue to expand its

range of activities in a measured and steady manner. I am very proud to share that our

next mission is to set up our Parents Resource Centre, a convenient place for parents

and patients to meet and obtain help and support.

Finally, I want to thank all the members of the Executive Committee, our parents,

children and other supporters for their efforts over the year. If I have not covered

everyone who has been involved, forgive me. All I can say is that while you may be

unsung, your efforts are most definitely recognised and greatly appreciated.
