Edward Michalski is running for a sixth term as highway superintendent in the town of Evans.

He said that he takes pride in the fact that he has “never exceeded or overspent the department’s budgeted appropriations, during his 24-year tenure, despite increasing costs of materials and equipment.”

Michalski has overseen several drainage projects, coordinated a fuel manage-ment system for accountability purposes, applied for Consolidated Highway Im-provement Funds, filed for FEMA reimbursements for storm-related emergen-cies and shared services with other municipalities.

Since the creation of a department of public works in Evans, Michalski has served as coordinator of town projects, utilizing town equipment and employees.

Born and raised in Hamburg, he graduated from St. Mary of the Lake and Fron-tier Central schools and attended the Community College of the Finger Lakes, where he received an associate degree in science. He attended SUC at Brockport and earned a bachelor’s degree in science, as well as a certification to teach.

He served in the United States Air Force and worked at Bethlehem Steel for 10 years, as a millwright. He was a member of United Steelworkers Local 2603. When the plant closed, he went into the construction business for 11 years until 1989, when he was elected superintendent of highways.

He has been married to his wife Nancy for 43 years and has been living in Evans since 1975. The couple has four children, all Lake Shore Central graduates, and 11 grandchildren.

Michalski has been a member of the North Evans Volunteer Fire Company, serv-ing as a volunteer fireman, for 37 years. He was elected fire commissioner of the North Evans Fire District in 1987 and served in that capacity for 15 years. He is currently secretary to the fire department and the fire district.

The Evans highway superintendent said that his decision to seek re-election is based on his continued enthusiasm for the position, especially for the challeng-es of the newly-created department of public works.

His stated goals are to continue to improve and maintain 70 centerline miles of roads; to continue to organize the town’s department of public works for cost effectiveness and to work with board members and departments to improve programs and services.

Michalski is endorsed by the Repulbican, Conservative and Independence Par-ties and recently received the endorsement from CSEA, Erie Lounty Local 815, AFSCME, AFL-CIO.

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity soccer team defeated vis-iting Amherst 2-0 on Thursday, September 19th. AJ Ber-gum scored both of the Eagle goals, one set up from Wade Bergum on a beautiful through ball to goal, and one set up from Chris Beckley on a nice head ball flick. Goalkeeper Bryce Parker-Parker and his stout defenders turned away all of Amherst's shots and crosses to maintain the clean sheet. Lake Shore turned in a strong team performance with many players playing through injury or illness. Lake Shore's overall record now stands at 5-3 and 3-2 in league play. The Eagles next play on Wednesday, September 25th at Pioneer.

SEPTEMBER MEETING OF EVANS DEMOCRATIC CLUB

VFW Commander Joe Catalano led the Evans Demo-cratic Club in the pledge to the flag. Catalano is a five-time Bronze Star recipient. Several attendees expressed frustration with the fact that their "Dominic Calandra for Highway Superinten-dent" signs were taken from their lawns. About 40 signs were reported missing; it is unknown how many missing Calandra signs are unreported. Town Chair Robert "Bob-Cat" Catalino reported on the lawsuit to keep Democratic endorsed candidates off the ballot for the September primary. The lawsuit was dismissed before the primary. Last Friday the Appellate Division denied the Republican appeal. The Evans Town Clerk candidate endorsed by the Democratic committee, longtime Deputy Clerk, Lynn Krajacic, went on to win the Democratic primary. Kra-jacic, a Republican, had not been endorsed by the local Republicans. Krajacic and Dominic Calandra will go on to the general election in November. Dominic Calandra reported on various campaign ac-tivities in his race for Highway Superintendent. His team is enjoying a "bounce" from the 40% of the Independent vote that he won on Primary Day: "It was only 24 votes that separated us." He is having another campaign event in early October and is looking at holding it at the Ameri-can Legion. The Southtowns Democratic Committee is holding a "Meet The Candidates" night at the Four Corners Cafe on Thursday, September 19, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.The remainder of the meeting was spent on brainstorm-ing and planning for the November election. Students from Southtowns Catholic School took advan-tage of the weather and headed to Sturgeon Point Marina to clean the beach on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The same stu-dents grabbed their trash bags again on Saturday, Sept. 21 to participate in the Great Lakes Beach Sweep. They picked up Woodlawn Beach in the pouring rain. PARKS AND POOL RENOVATIONS The Town of Evans DPW recently completed renovations at the Town Park and Thompson Pool parking areas. The projects were a joint effort by the parks dept. employees who prepared the area and the highway dept. employees who applied the oil/stone surface treatment material. The oil seals the pavement and the stone provides a wearing surface. The process is the same used on many highways. Director of Department of Public Works/ Highway Super-intendent Ed Michalski stated: “Further renovations are planned in the future for both facilities as well as the park-ing area at the senior center by the DPW.”
