Young Israel of Greater Cleveland January 2021 Newsletter - Teves/Shevat 5781
From the Rabbi’s Shtender
Dear Member,
I want to thank everyone for their words of comfort during the week I was sitting shiva for my
sister. In addition, your brachos of refuah shlaima were very much appreciated. I must apologize to
those of you who could not get through to me to be menachem avel over the phone. Since we were using
the phone method only, it became almost impossible to keep up with the volume of calls coming in. I look
forward to our connecting for more joyous reasons in the future.
Thank you again
Sincerely,
Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein

From
The following is taken from the personal prayer of Rav Nachman of Breslov.
“Please, O G-d, have mercy upon me that I should not live a life of futility. May I always reflect
upon myself, what am I doing in this world?”
Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, M.D. tells the following story:
A man was once sentenced to twenty five years of hard labor. His hands were chained to the
handle of a great wheel that was set into a wall, and, for many hours each day, he had to turn this
massive wheel. He would often wonder what he was accomplishing. Perhaps the wheel turned a
grindstone in a flour mill, or perhaps he was generating energy that was being converted for some
purpose.
When his sentence expired and the shackles were removed, the man, broken in both body and
spirit, ran immediately to the other side of the wall. To his horror, there was nothing there. He
collapsed with bitter disappointment.
Our greatest need is to have purpose, to know what we are doing in this world.

IMPORTANT WINTER SHACHARIS REMINDER
The earliest time one may put on Tallis & Tefillin is from a time called “Mi-She-Yakir,”
which is approximately one hour before sunrise. For those davening at our earlier minyanim (6:40
-6:45 am), the two recommended solutions to this problem are as follows:
Begin Shacharis and wait to put on Tallis & Tefillin after Yishtabach (except for the
Shliach Tzibur who puts them on before Yishtabach)
Put on the Tallis & Tefillin before davening without a bracha and after completing
Yishtabach move the Tallis and Tefillin slightly and recite the bracha.

Clilei Torah / Clilei HaChodesh – Frequently Asked Questions
What is Clilei Torah?
Clilei Torah (“Crowns of Torah”) is the annual Torah journal of the Young Israel of Greater Cleveland. It was founded in 2015,
on Josh Botnick’s initiative, to encourage YIGC members (lay members as well as professional Torah educators) to delve into and
share words of Torah on topics that interest them. The first two volumes were published for Shavuos; subsequent volumes have
been published in advance of Rosh Hashana.
What is Clilei HaChodesh?
Clilei HaChodesh is published each Shabbos Mevarchim, with two divrei Torah by members. Each month’s issue is available
both online and in the lobby of our Beachwood location.
While Clilei Torah articles can be any length, Clilei HaChodesh submissions are generally 500-1000 words. Topics may relate to
the month of publication but do not have to.
Who can write for Clilei?
Any YIGC member! Men, women, and youth (we’ve had writers as young as Junior High) are invited and encouraged to write.
Everyone has something worth sharing.
What can I write about?
Any Torah topic! Did you hear a dvar Torah that inspired you? Share it (with proper attribution)! Notice something in the weekly
parsha that you would like to study in more depth? Do you have a novel way to understand a particular Torah question? Is there
an area of halacha that fascinates you? These are just some of the ways our past writers have approached their submissions.
What if I can’t think of a topic, have a topic but don’t know how to research it, haven’t written an essay since college and
don’t remember grammar rules…?
We’ll help! We are so fortunate at YIGC to have Rabbi Moshe Berger available to learn with our members. Once you feel
comfortable with what you have to say, Rabbi Berger and Sarah Rudolph (Clilei Editor) can help with editorial suggestions to
produce a polished piece you’ll be proud to share with fellow YIGC members and beyond.
Wait – what if I don’t want anyone changing what I write?
Virtually all edits are only suggestions. Clilei’s editorial philosophy calls for allowing each writer to review every change, even
the minor ones, before publication. (For this reason, it is important to get your submissions in as early as possible – to allow for
turnaround time on edits.)
I’m ready to give it a try! How can I get started?
Great! Contact Rabbi Berger at [email protected] or (216) 533-5233, or Sarah Rudolph at [email protected], to let us
know you’re interested and we’ll go from there.
This is such a valuable, inspiring project, allowing shul members to learn and grow together! Are there other ways to
support Clilei, in addition to writing?
Yes! Contact Ronnie Shulman at [email protected] to become a sponsor of either Clilei HaChodesh or Clilei Torah.
