What is Young Chamber
• In 2003 businesses throughout the Country complained that academically students were great, however “Employability Skills” left a lot to be desired
• Young Chamber was formed to bring business face to face with students in school time.
• Government funded, 1,000s of schools joined the initiative with business backing.
Progress
• Government withdrew funding during economic downturn
• Alternative funding had to be found, – Schools had to raise funds– Businesses were asked for support– Local Government helped in some areas
• We survive today by one of the above actions at a reduced school participation.
Todays Young Chamber
• KICC have developed a method of delivering Young Chamber into schools with an adaptable menu to suit the schools needs and budget.
• We have Chamber business members involved in the delivery and funding.
• Most important we have the students running Young Chamber in their schools.
How does it work
• Form a Board of students usually year 11,12,13.
• Students have to take responsibility, learn to delegate, and work as a team.
• We normally start by organising a “Business breakfast/lunch” to meet local businesses.
• Think of projects, organise and run as a business, including raising a business case.
How does it work (cont)
• Arrange for businesses to visit school and have face to face discussions on work prospects and the soft skills associated with getting a job.
• The business lunch must be funded by a local business and the students need to meet, present the business case and come away with the funding, (quite an achievement)
• Lastly this is BY STUDENTS FOR STUDENTS.
Summary
• We have a number of schools participating, but only respond to school requests for YC.
• We have 1 Local Authority who funds the 6 schools in their area.
• We have the support of businesses throughout Kent to assist with this project.
• If funded correctly the business/education partnership can deliver Employability Skills.
