One of the Bay Area’s best-loved chefs is back for a new adventure! Martin Yan returns to KQED with the new series Yan Can Cook: Spice Kingdom, through which he’ll explore the local flavors of Chengdu — the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province. Recognized as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2010, Chengdu is brimming with delicious dishes and snacks on every street. Watch as Yan uncovers the traditions, places and people at the heart of Chengdu’s thriving food scenes, from attending a bamboo banquet to visiting a few of the city’s estimated 30,000 hot pot restaurants. Yan goes beyond Chengdu’s typical Sichuan classics — such as Mapo Tofu, Kung Pao Chicken and Ganbian Sijidou (dry stir-fried green beans) — and journeys deep into the hidden corners of the region’s cuisine to discover the rich cultural and culinary traditions of southwestern China. In 13 episodes, Yan takes viewers throughout the Spice Kingdom and then shows them how to create dishes based on what he’s learned. And no excuses for not trying out these recipes in your own kitchen because if “Yan Can Cook, So Can You!”

Yan has spent his career promoting Chinese cuisine. Born in Guangzhou in southern China, Yan is a second-generation “culinarian,” who was first inspired by his mother in the tiny kitchen of their family restaurant. After receiving his formal restaurant training in Hong Kong, Yan immigrated to Calgary, Canada, where, on one snowy day, he was asked to appear on a news program to demonstrate Chinese cooking. The rest, as they say, is television history. Premiering in 1982, Yan Can Cook grew to become one of the most popular cooking programs on public television, both in North America and on the global stage. Yan has hosted more than 1,500 episodes of Yan Can Cook, broadcast in over 50 countries. The series has twice won the James Beard Award for Best Food Documentary Show. KQED Presents is proud to represent Yan Can Cook: Spice Kingdom nationally, which will be distributed via American Public Television in Spring 2018.

Yan Can Cook: Spice Kingdom premieres Wednesday, February 14, at 7pm on KQED 9.

Meet Nastia Voynovskaya, KQED Arts’ new music editor. Prior to joining KQED, Voynovskaya was the music editor at East Bay Express, and has written for VICE, the San Francisco Chronicle, SFMOMA Open Space, Bandcamp and more. She also served as the online editor for Hi-Fructose magazine and arts editor for The Daily Californian at the University of California at Berkeley. Voynovskaya graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2012, with a B.A. in comparative literature.

What were your earliest experiences writing about music and when did it click that you wanted to do it professionally? The first piece I ever published was for a student fashion magazine at U.C. Berkeley; it was about a Lil B’s outfit at a Pack concert in 2008. Not long after, I joined the student newspaper, The Daily Cal, where I was assigned to cover Noise Pop in 2010. Since then, I’ve pretty much been addicted — though music writing became my main beat in 2015, when I became music editor at East Bay Express. Once I started writing predominantly about music, it clicked for me that my professional world could merge with what I do for fun, which is go to shows.

Which types of stories/artists do you gravitate toward?I have a great appreciation for most genres, but I’m most interested in stories with a strong human-interest angle, beyond “this album is cool.” I love to write about artists who are pushing boundaries creatively, sparking conversations about social issues or working to serve the community in some way. E-40, Goapele,

Arts’ New Music Editor Will Pep Up Your PlaylistsMistah F.A.B., Saturn Rising, King Woman and Brass Liberation Orchestra have been some of my favorite interviews.

Who’s your dream interview and why?Rihanna. I love her music, her confidence, her fashion sense and her business sense. Also, Björk and Missy Elliott.

How many shows do you see on average every week? What are some highlights from the past year?I’d say anywhere between one and three shows a week. The best performances I saw all year were Solange — at FYF Fest, Outside Lands and the Greek Theatre — Björk and Missy Elliott at FYF, Gucci Mane at the Warfield and Moses Sumney at Great American Music Hall.

What are your favorite venues in the Bay Area?Fox Theatre and Great American Music Hall for moving, near-spiritual experiences; Elbo Room, the Legionnaire Saloon, the Layover and Starline Social Club for intimate dance parties and shows.

Spots are limited and open to anyone who teaches young people in a classroom, after-school program or a community organization. To sign up, visit:tinyurl.com/KQEDAmericanCreed

Are there ideals Americans share in common? How can educators help students explore and discuss the differences that divide us? Stanford professors Condoleezza Rice and David Kennedy teamed up across party lines to ask these questions in the new film American Creed. The one-hour documentary features stories of unlikely activists, including baseball manager Joe Maddon, novelist Junot Diaz and others who come together to build community around the values that unite us. Interspersed among the stories, first-generation college students discuss what the American Creed means to them. In partnership with the National Writing Project and Facing History and Ourselves, KQED is hosting an

Following a national search, Mary Louise Kelly has been selected to succeed Robert Siegel as host of NPR’s flagship news program, All Things Considered, alongside Audie Cornish and Ari Shapiro. Most recently, Kelly was NPR’s national security correspondent, covering the CIA and other spy agencies. She has been NPR’s point person on the Russia investigation for the past year and has brought listeners in-depth coverage of terrorism, wars and rising nuclear powers. “Mary Louise Kelly is an immensely talented reporter, and her deep command of the issues make her a formidable interviewer. After a lengthy search, we found precisely what we were looking for close to home. We are thrilled to have her on air every afternoon,” said Chris

Turpin, acting senior vice president of News. “Mary Louise combines rigorous thinking with the ability to put herself in the listener’s shoes. She will help us usher in a new era of the program.” Kelly McEvers, who for the past two years has co-hosted both All Things Considered and the Embedded podcast, has stepped down from All Things Considered to work exclusively as host and executive producer of Embedded, which will increase its output in 2018. Embedded will expand to become a premiere outlet for NPR’s original, in-depth journalism and will showcase McEvers’ inexhaustible curiosity and passion for tackling complicated, challenging subjects at the center of our culture.

Nas. Gifted poet. Confessor. Agitator. Metaphor master. Street disciple. Political firebrand. Tongue-twisting genius. With music in his blood, courtesy of his famed blues musician father Olu Dara, the self-taught trumpeter attracted crowds with his playing at age four, wrote his first verse at age seven and, with 1994’s Illmatic, created one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time before he could legally drink. Watch Nas perform live from the Kennedy Center in this Great Performances special.

Nas Live From the Kennedy Center: Classical Hip-Hop premieres Friday, February 2, at 10pm on KQED 9.

Meet the titans and barons of the glittering late 19th century, whose materialistic extravagance contrasted harshly with the poverty of the struggling workers who challenged them. The vast disparities between them sparked debates still raging today.

The Gilded Age: American Experience premieres Tuesday, February 6, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Brokenwood, New Zealand is a small, rural town where memories — and animosities — run deep. When Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd arrives on assignment to investigate a possible murder, he begins to reassess his life and decides to stay on indefinitely. As he settles into the quieter country life, he forges relationships with his colleagues, including Detective Constable Kristin Sims who initially questions his unusual method of doing things. Together, they navigate small town politics amid murder and other mysteries.

New episodes from The Brokenwood Mysteries season 3 air Saturday, February 10, at 8pm and 9:33pm on KQED Plus.

Sudan is the last male of his sub-species, the Northern White Rhinoceros. Watch as Nature chronicles his harrowing journey on “The Last Rhino” through the international cast of characters who have been involved in Sudan’s life, from when he was snatched as a calf from his mother’s side in war-torn Central Africa, to his captivity as a prized exhibit in a cold, concrete zoo behind the Iron Curtain while poaching devastated his kind to extinction back home. Now 43 years old and half-blind, Sudan is living out his days under 24-hour armed guard, on a protective sanctuary in Kenya.

Nature’s “The Last Rhino” premieres Wednesday, February 9, at 9pm on KQED 9.
