SAVING DATA Saving and backing up your data
DRAM data is lost when you turn off the power to the instrument.
Save the data to the flash ROM/a USB storage device/external device such as a computer.
Data stored to the flash ROM may be lost due to malfunction or incorrect operation. Save important data to a USB storage
device/external device such as a computer.
Never attempt to turn off the power while data is being written to Flash ROM (while an Executing... or Please keep
power on message is shown). Turning the power off in this state results in loss of all user data and may cause the system
to freeze (due to corruption of data in the Flash ROM). This means that this synthesizer may not be able to start up prop-erly, even when turning the power on next time.
Backing up the USB storage device/external media
To protect against data loss through media damage, we recommend that you save your important data onto two USB stor-
age devices/external media.
Be sure toperform it

DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE (MOTIF XS6/MOTIF XS7)
The unit is heavy. Treat the unit with enough carewhen lifting it up.
If you want to turn the unit or control panel
assembly upside down, prepare supporting
materials and put the unit or control panel on them
with the end portions of the unit or control panel
placed on the supporting materials. (Fig. A)
Attach the filament tapes in the same way as they
were before removal.
When removing buttons attached to the PNAcircuit board, PNB-PN circuit board or PNC circuit
board, be careful not to damage the buttons. Hold
side faces of a button to handle it with relative
safety.
Notes on Flat Cable
Contacts are visible through the back side. When
connecting to the connector, pay attention not to
insert the cable inversely. (Photo A)
During assembly, pay attention that connectors, cables or the like are not pinched by circuit
boards, frames, etc.

DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE (MOTIF XS8)
The unit is heavy. Treat the unit with enough care
when lifting it up.
If you want to turn the unit or control panel assem-
bly upside down, prepare supporting materials and
put the unit or control panel on them with the end
portions of the unit or control panel placed on the
supporting materials. (Fig. A)
Attach the filament tapes in the same way as they
were before removal.
When removing buttons attached to the PNA circuit
board, PNB-PN circuit board or PNC circuit board,
be careful not to damage the buttons. Hold side
faces of a button to handle it with relative safety.
Notes on Flat Cable
Contacts are visible through the back side. When
connecting to the connector, pay attention not to
insert the cable inversely. (Photo A)
During assembly, pay attention that connectors,
cables or the like are not pinched by circuit boards, frames, etc.

Installation Precautions
Before installing the optional hardware, make sure you
have a Philips screwdriver and ample space to work.
WARNING
Before beginning installation, switch off the power to the
instrument and connected peripherals, and unplug them
from the power outlet. Installation or removal of any
devices should be started ONLY after the instrument
(and the optional hardware) returns to normal room
temperature. Then remove all cables connecting theinstrument to other devices. (Leaving the power cord
connected while working can result in electric shock.
Leaving other cables connected can interfere with work.)
Be careful not to drop any screws inside the instrument
during installation. (This can be prevented by keeping
the optional units and cover away from the instrument
while attaching). If this does happen, be sure to remove
the screw(s) from inside the unit before turning the
power on. Loose screws inside the instrument cancause improper operation or serious damage.
Install the optional units carefully as described in the
procedure below. Improper installation can cause shorts
which may result in irreparable damage and pose a fire
hazard.
Do not disassemble, modify, or apply excessive force to
board areas and connectors on optional units. Bending
or tampering with boards and connectors may lead to

Installing the mLAN16E2
Turn the power of the MOTIF XS off, and
disconnect the AC power cord. Also, makesure to disconnect the MOTIF XS from anyconnected external devices.
Remove the cover for the mLAN16E2 fromthe rear panel. With the rear panel of this synthesizer facing you,
remove the two screws from the cover.
ImportantKeep the removed screws in a safe place. They will beused when installing the mLAN16E2. Be careful not tomisplace them. Keep the cover and fixing screws in asafe place for future use.

2
Replace the cover with the two screws youremoved in step 2 above.
4mLAN16E2The opt ional ly avai lable mLAN expansion board
(mLAN16E2) can be installed to the MOTIF XS6 and
MOTIF XS7. The MOTIF XS8 is equipped with two mLAN
connectors equivalent to the mLAN16E2 by default.
CAUTION
Malfunctions or incorrect operation may occur if themLAN16E2 is not properly fastened.

Turn over the MOTIF XS so that the key-board faces down, giving you direct accessto the underside of the instrument.
To protect the Knobs, Wheels and Sliders fromdamage, place the keyboard so the four corners
are supported by something that provides sufficient
support like magazines or cushions. Place supports
at all four corners, taking care not to touch the
Knobs, Wheels and Sliders.

Optional DIMM Installation
This section explains how to install DIMM memory
modules to the MOTIF XS.
The MOTIF XS does not necessari ly support al l
commercially available DIMMs. Before purchasing DIMMs,
see the following website:
http://www.yamahasynth.com/
DIMM Type and DIMM Configuration
Yamaha recommends that you purchase DIMMs thatconform to the JEDEC* standard. Please be aware,
however, that conformance to this standard does not
constitute a guarantee that the DIMMs will operate
correctly on the MOTIF XS.
* JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) sets
standards for terminal configurations within electronic devices.
Use only 168-pin DIMMs of 64, 128, 256 or 512 MB
capacity (synchronized DRAM; PC100 or PC133).

Insert the two DIMMs into the DIMM sockets.4Re-install the cover you removed in step 3,in reverse order.
Check that the installed DIMMs are function-ing properly.Set the MOTIF XS right-side up, and connect the
power cord to the rear-panel AC IN jack and an AC
outlet. Turn on the power, go to the Sampling display
by pressing the [INTEGRATED SAMPLING] button,
and press the [F6] Rec button then [SF6] INFO
button. If the DIMMs have been installed properly,
the appropriate available memory size is indicated inthe display.
NOTE If the DIMMs have not been installed
properly, the MOTIF XS may freeze when you
press the [INTEGRATED SAMPLING] button.
If this occurs, turn the power off, perform the
instructions above again, and make sure to install
the DIMMs firmly in step 4.
