UniversityDMR/TRBO and Motorola Codeplug Overview

What is DMR/TRBO?(and why do we care?)
• DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) is an international commercial digital radio standard
• TRBO refers to MotoTRBO which is Motorola’s implementation of the DMR standard
• Many Amateur Radio repeater networks use MotoTRBO equipment, which is why they are commonly referred to as “TRBO” networks
• You do not need to use a Motorola MotoTRBO radio to use these networks
Mike’s DMR Doctrine
If something about using DMR for Amateur Radio doesn’t make sense, remember that DMR was created for commercial use, and was never designed nor intended for Amateur Radio use.
TWO Repeaters in One!
Lower infrastructure cost, 1 box in rack TWO voice channels from one repeater
Available Radios

• Programming software and firmware updates free
Others
• Hytera (P/MD782)
• Vertex eVerge
• Vertex VD720(0)

What’s in a codeplug?
• Channels
• Frequencies – Color Code – Slot – Talk/Receive Group
• Zones - “Groups” of channels
• Geography
• Community of interest (department)
• Contacts
• Identification of Talk Groups and Individuals (Radio ID)
• All Call (used for Simplex operation in RMHAM)

Talk Groups
Colorado=700 Lookout=710 South=719
Denver=720 North=721
Talk Groups
• RMHAM assigns only one Talk Group per Repeater Slot
• Other networks may have more than one Talk Group per Repeater Slot
• DMR-MARC WW, WW English and NA share a slot
• DMR-MARC Local and Regional share a slot
• Having more than one Talk Group on a slot can cause confusing during scanning
• Be sure you know which Talk Group you are transmitting to!
Individual ID
Unique ID – displays caller on receiving radio
DMR-MARC has created a standard
RMHR recommends DMR-MARC standard
RMHR Generic Codeplug
• Intended as a starting point to get hams on the air quickly
• Sixteen (16) Zones (banks)
• TRBO zones based on where you will be using the radio (South, Denver, North)
• Analog Repeater based on frequency
• Simplex includes analog, analog NB and digital

What is Roaming?
List of related channels
• In practice, channels that use the same Talk Group
The radio will tune to the channel with the best signal
Not all radios support Roaming (like the CS700)
Best used when you only need to communicate on a single Talk Group
